Product Overview

Huawei P40 is part of Huawei's late-2020 flagship P-series smartphones. It features dual front cameras and three rear cameras that are a step-up from the Mate 30 5G, though the Kirin 990 5G SoC has been retained.
The main camera in the P40 features a large 1/1.28" sensor that enhances low-light performance, while the front-facing IR camera unlocks facial authentication.
An enhanced in-screen fingerprint reader in the P40 offers 30% faster biometric authentication compared to the previous model.
The P40 also comes with WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, an improvement over the Mate 30 series.

Reviewers from nextpit have found the following***:
The P40 Lite is powered by a Kirin 810 SoC which has proven to be a particularly capable processor. Unlike the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and especially the Huawei Y6s, this device does not heat up even after hours of intense workload. With this smartphone, you are guaranteed of sharp and bright pictures without having to purchase an expensive flagship.

Pros
  • Good value for money
  • Good battery life
  • Good cameras
Cons
  • No wireless charging
  • No Google Maps

nextpit[2]

Reviewers from nextpit have found the following***:
Huawei P40 incorporates the best photo sensor from the Huawei P40 Pro (the 50MP main lens) At night, the loss of information is inevitable and the photos have too much digital noise and therefore logically lack detail. Night mode, with its four-second exposure time, allows a longer shutter speed to capture more light.

Pros
  • Excellent camera performance
  • Good battery life
  • Fast charging
Cons
  • No wireless charging
  • No night mode

Reviewers from notebookcheck have found the following***:
The HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G is an in-house development from Huawei's subsidiary. While it cannot quite match the Snapdragon 865 in terms of raw processing power, users will be hard-pressed to notice the difference in practice. Playing games at up to 60 FPS is no problem on the Huawei P40.

Pros
  • Bright AMOLED display
  • Fast SoC
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • Mediocre cameras
  • Slow SoC

Reviewers from techadvisor have found the following***:
The Huawei P40 costs £699 in the UK and is available to pre-order from Huawei and Carphone Warehouse. The P40 marks a return to Huawei's earlier ethos of undercutting the competition while still offering premium hardware. The main 50Mp rear sensor is amongst the best I've seen in any smartphone, further enhanced by the smartphone's third-gen AI system. The secondary ultra-wide and 3x optical zoom lenses can hold their own too.

Pros
  • Premium design
  • Great camera
Cons
  • No Google Play Services
  • No 5G or Wi-Fi 6 Plus

techradar[5]

Reviewer score 72%
Reviewers from techradar have found the following***:
The Huawei P40 runs Android 10, with EMUI 10.1 over the top. You'll get 128GB or 256GB of storage depending on what variant of the phone you buy. The phone scored 2994 in Geekbench 5 software, which is higher than the Samsung Galaxy S20. It's currently unclear when the company will be updating this handset to Android 11 software.

trustedreviews[6]

Reviewers from trustedreviews have found the following***:
The P40 is a great affordable flagship phone in most respects. It has the best camera available at its price, outperforming the pricier iPhone 11. It also undercuts the Samsung Galaxy S20 5G by £100, despite delivering superior imaging. The main reason not to recommend the P40, is unsurprisingly, its lack of Google services.

Pros
  • Top-notch camera
  • Excellent battery life
  • Excellent performance
Cons
  • No wireless charging
  • No 5G
