Toyota Corolla Mk7 (chassis code E210) is an affordable compact sedan in production from 2018. It is available with a range of inline-3 and inline-4 engines that displaced 1.5 to 1.8 liters.

Toyota has made a good effort in aerodynamics, with a decent 0.28 coefficient of drag to show for it. The official fuel economy rating is exceptionally rosy, though it may cast more doubts on the trustworthiness of the regulators and perhaps the owner's own sanity than it relates to reality.

Another plus is the small 10.4m (34.1ft) turning circle.

The Toyota's powertrain mostly backs up this level of relaxation – assuming you don't ask too much of it. It feels better tied down than the Octavia, too, with weightier steering that's just as precise to make the most of the good level of grip on offer. The Corolla trumps the Skoda for safety kit, because it features Toyota's Safety Sense 2 package as standard.

The 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid packs a decent amount of technology and its ride is nice and sedate. Apple CarPlay is included, but Android Auto is not, despite other 2020-model-year Toyotas picking it up. There are no USB ports for rear-seat occupants, which is another technological letdown. Even though the car lacks a sunroof, the whole cabin stays nice and bright.

The Corolla has Toyota's Safety Sense suite of driver assistance features. Dynamic cruise control was able to adjust quickly when another car cut into my lane. The Corolla Hybrid comes in just one trim, the LE, and is only available as a sedan. The base MRSP is $22,950; our as-tested price was $24,303.
