Product Overview

Audi e-tron is an electric crossover SUV. It is the first fully-electric car by Audi, using two electric motors to drive all four wheels. The Audi e-tron sits above Q5 and under Q8 in Audi's premium crossover lineup.
In September 2020, Audi introduced e-tron S and S Sportback with more powerful 370 kW tri-motor powertrains (two on the rear axle and one on the front, with rear-axle torque vectoring).

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The £79,900 E-tron Sportback is more driver-orientated than the £71,520. It’s capable of stringing together a series of medium-to-high-speed corners. Despite heady levels of weight transfer under braking, body movement is excellently suppressed thanks to a combination of firm damping and fast-acting qualities of the standard air suspension.

Pros
  • Class-leading refinement
  • Excellent ride quality
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of refinement

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
Audi E-tron S Sportback has three electric motors: a larger one sitting up front and two smaller units nestled within a subframe in the axle at the rear. Together, they develop 429bhp and 596lb ft of torque. Overboost function triggered on kickdown in Sport mode adds a further 67bhp. The official 0-62mph time (4.5sec) really doesn't do it justice.

Pros
  • Excellent off-road performance
  • Powerful engines
  • Excellent handling
Cons
  • Not as agile as E-tron 55 Sportback

autocar[3]

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
In the E-tron S Sportback, a large electric motor powers the front axle and there are twin smaller motors at the rear. This allows torque vectoring and fully variable torque distribution between the rear wheels for a promised increase in agility. In real-world conditions, the handling gains feel marginal but are apparent. You won’t be trading in your Porsche 911 but you will be impressed by the grip levels.

Pros
  • Powerful twin-motor rear axle
  • Impressive handling
Cons
  • Lack of driver involvement

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
For ‘Sportback’, read four-door coupé, or any other phrase that means more rakish looks at the expense of a 45-litre reduction in boot space. This time around, the raked back window means the range starts in semi-sporting S line trim but the hardware is the same as the squarer car. There’s a skateboardy big battery beneath the floor with an electric motor front and rear, both driving through their own single-speed gearing.

Pros
  • Superb range
  • Big battery
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Quite heavy
  • No touchscreen

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The E-tron is a lot more fun on dirt than a family-oriented luxury SUV ought to be. The low centre of gravity helps erase body roll while the electric quattro system multitasks to direct torque to the wheel with the most traction and power the car through a bend. There is a built-in Offroad mode that unlocks the drivetrain’s full output.

Pros
  • Powerful electric drivetrain
  • Comfortable to drive

The first impression when you drive the E-tron is its on-road quietness. Even by the standards of modern-day electric cars, it is super-refined. There’s a faint, distant whine from the electric motors at each end of the cabin. For home charging there is a standard 11kW charger, which charges the battery in 8.5 hours.

The E-tron is the only EV I’ve come across so far to have two charging ports: Type 2 seven-pin sockets on both sides. It has a configurable digital instrument panel and a pair of sharp, responsive, central touchscreens for the infotainment and secondary functions such as the climate control. You have to add the £1950 Tour Pack to get extra driver aids such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance and traffic sign recognition.

Cons
  • No automatic climate control

The Q4 E-tron 50 Sportback Quattro is Audi's first foray into EVs for ordinary motorists. It has fastback styling, four-wheel drive, the bigger of two offered battery packs, two electric motors instead of one (one front, one rear, producing a combined 294bhp) and delivers brisk 0-62mph acceleration of 6.2sec. It's not truly sporty, because of its height and bulk, but it is smooth and serene to drive.

This is a quiet, refined, mature-feeling and fairly precise-handling zero-emissions family car. In many ways, it’s precisely the sort you’d have expected Audi to make - but not in every way. It has impressive space and practicality and creditable electric range, too. But it doesn’t have the classic Audi design appeal you might have expected of it.

Audi’s cousin of the Skoda Enyaq iV and Volkswagen ID 4 in this form gets a 77kWh battery (as in the 40) and two motors, together offering up 295bhp and 339lb ft. The healthy 94bhp uptick over the 40 means the 50 Quattro is 1.3sec quicker from 0-62mph. A flat floor and wheels pushed right out into the corners combine to provide plenty of room, and the three-stack dashboard arrangement looks smart.

The Audi e-tron is a big, heavy car - weighing the best part of two and a half tonnes. The Audi e-tron has been on sale for a little more than a year. It's time to welcome the coupé-inspired e- tron Sportback to the UK. You will need to step up to the more expensive specs, but like-for-like, the premium this car commands isn't as sizeable as you might imagine. The Jaguar I-Pace is a superior all-rounder, with sharper handling and a better real-world range.

The Audi e-tron S Sportback is a high-performance version of Audi's Tesla Model X rival. It's the first mass-produced EV to make use of a triple-electric-motor set-up. One motor drives the front axle, while the two remaining motors power each rear wheel individually. The end result is a total output of 496bhp and a staggering 973Nm of torque. Audi says 0-62mph takes 4.5 seconds, with top speed limited to 130mph.

The Audi e-tron S is a big, all-electric SUV that delivers a colossal 496bhp and 973Nm of torque from its 95kWh battery and three-motor set-up. Despite this, the huge output and strong traction from its all-wheel-drive system means it'll go from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds. Despite its 21-inch alloy wheels, and carrying a whopping 700kg battery, the ride is surprisingly good on air suspension. The sporty roofline doesn't have an impact on the car's practicality, and there's a powered tailgate that reveals a 660-litre boot.

Audi e-Tron Sportback is a 2.5 tonne SUV measuring nearly five metres in length. Power is only available for eight seconds but under normal running conditions that's more than enough. The e-Tron is the first production car to replace side mirrors with rear cameras mounted on spidery black spindles. It took all day and in excess of 200 miles to get used to looking further down than usual, at screens mounted in the doors just above the door handle. Audi has sized it close to the Q7 in length but the Q5 in height. The wide boot stows 605 litres (and there's underfloor storage which isn't always possible in electric cars)

The Audi e-tron is an electric car for those who want to keep their EV preference under the radar. So it's an alternative to the Mercedes EQC and Jaguar I-Pace. At a glance, it appears like a petrol- or diesel-powered Audi SUV, but like every cake shop in the world, it gets much more interesting once you step inside.

The e-tron Sportback's price is almost £70k, yet it doesn't have rear-seat cupholders. However, there's plenty of space for five adults, and the more sloping rear tailgate hasn't had too much of an adverse effect on luggage capacity. It has 615 litres available, or enough for seven carry-on cases, although the Audi's capacity is bested by the 656 litres offered by the Jaguar I-Pace.

The E-Tron slots in between the Q5 and Q7 SUVs from a purely dimensional standpoint. It's substantially more expensive than even the Q7, which starts at $53,550 in Premium trim. You will, however, have to live without steering-wheel heating, which is a big missing piece for an EV.

The E-Tron Sportback offers 27.2 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, or 54.5 with them folded. Headroom is a bit tight for those over 5 feet, 9 inches and the windows don't roll down very far. The cabin certainly feels more intimate and racier, but that's mostly when looking in the rearview mirror.
