Product Overview

Sony FE 35mm F1.8 is a wide-angle prime lens for Sony E-mount. It covers the full-frame image circle. Introduced by Sony in 2019, it has 11 elements in 9 groups.
For incremental weathers, Sony is kind enough to include weather sealing.
The bright maximum aperture for a wide-angle lens is appreciated for night photography, though some may prefer the perspective of an ultra wide-angle lens for this. Even though the lens is not stabilized, at this focal range it does not usually matter. In fact, some may be able to get cleaner corners without image stabilization.

Reviewer score 77% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The Sony FE 35mm f1.8 is small and light, reasonably priced, offers a nice magnification in close-up shooting, and has a multi-function focus hold button. The lens focuses in around 0.7 sec on a Sony A7R II from infinity to 0.43m (1:10 magnification), which is pretty fast and the same as the Samyang. The focus ring is 28mm wide and can easily be operated with one finger just like all autofocus lenses for mirrorless cameras.
Pros
  • Small and light
  • Very good magnification
  • Multi-function focus hold button
Cons
  • No distance or dof markings
  • Focus ring needs some force

digitalpicture[2]

Reviewer score 77% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitalpicture have found:
The f/1.8 lens focuses considerably faster in AF-S mode. The Sony lens has a strong maximum magnification spec of 0.24x but the Tamron substantially surpasses that mark with a 0.50x spec. There are many other comparisons that can be made. Use the tools available on the site to create your own.
Pros
  • F/1.8 aperture
  • Low peripheral shading at f/2.8
  • Compact design
Cons
  • Low maximum magnification

dpreview[3]

Reviewer score 75% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from dpreview have found:
The Sony FE 35mm F1.8 joins the FE 28mm F2 and FE 85mm F 1.8 in the non-GM, non-G lineup. It's the priciest of the bunch, at $750. But it's equally at home on the higher-resolution sensor of the A7R III and A 7R IV.
Pros
  • Sharp, small-ish and relatively affordable primes
  • Compact and light
Cons
  • Pricey compared to film-era 35mm F1.8

pcmag[4]

Reviewer score 73% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The Sony E 35mm F1.8 OSS is a little gem of a lens. It's tiny and light, so it's not going to add too much weight to your camera. It can lock on as close as 11.8 inches, good enough for 1:6.7 magnification. If you want a true 1:1 macro, Sony offers the E 30mm F3.5 Macro.
Pros
  • Sharpness at f/1.8 and f/2.8
  • Quick, quiet focus
  • Dust and splash protection
Cons
  • Shallow field of view
  • No fluorine coating

phillipreeve[5]

Reviewer score 72% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from phillipreeve have found:
The Sony FE 1.8/35 is a very well balanced lens. It is very sharp, for most applications. It has pleasant bokeh at short to medium distances and becomes a bit harsher at longer distances but so does almost any competing 35mm. In general it corrects all aberrations good enough so you need to push it for them to become distracting.
Pros
  • Very sharp
  • Good bokeh at short to medium distances
  • Very good autofocus
Cons
  • F/2.8 is a bit slower than the 1.8/35
  • Autofocus is annoying

sonyalpha[6]

Reviewer score 83% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from sonyalpha have found:
The Sony 35mm F1.8 (700 euros) is a superb lens for the price. It is almost perfect and all photos taken with this lens are stunning. Outstanding sharpness Excellent contrast Excellent AF Small and lighweight Very good Bokeh balls All Weather resistance No CA Extremely short focusing distance (22cm vs 35cm for other 35mm) Very little distorsion Price (considering excellent performances) Very good build quality and ergonomics Average Very good color rendition but a bit oversatured and too contrasty for portraits Background blur sometimes harsch and lacking smoothness Heavy Vignetting (only disappear at F8) No aperture ring for video.
Pros
  • Very good optical quality
  • Very close to the Sony 90mm F2.8 macro
  • Very compact and light
  • Very fast, accurate, efficient in low light
Cons
  • F1.8 is more harsh than Zeiss

techradar[7]

Reviewer score 75% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techradar have found:
The FE 35mm f/1.8 delivers excellent sharpness whether you use it wide open or stopped down. This is complemented by very pleasing out-of-focus areas too. Lateral chromatic aberration, which tends to form towards the edges of the fame, is also somewhat noticeable, although this can be removed through in-camera corrections. There's also some slight pincushion distortion when shooting subjects with linear details although this won't be visible in the vast majority of scenes.
Pros
  • Excellent sharpness at wide apertures
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Occasional longitudinal chromatic aberration
