History
Bang & Olufsen (often abbreviated as B&O) is a Danish consumer electronics company best known for its audio products and high-end in-car audio systems. Currently, Bang & Olufsen primarily markets HiFi-ish speakers and portable speakers as well as headphones. Its in-car audio systems tend to be optional equipment in premium vehicles.
Founded in 1925, B&O manufactured a range of electronics products but had only moderate success. In the 1990s, the company shifted its direction and went up-market. It discontinued conventional HiFi component and loudspeaker production and refocused on micro audio systems (that became popular with the Japanese wave in the 1980s).
More recently, B&O further cut down its product line and places its bets primarily on premium audio (though it still markets TVs). Its biggest success is perhaps in the in-car audio market. With its collaboration with Audi, which went up-market in the last two decades, the status of the brand rose significantly.
The most distinctive feature of Bang & Olufsen products is their striking design.
