Product Overview

Alfa Romeo Stelvio (Tipo 949) is a compact crossover in production from 2017. It is available with a range of inline-4 and V6 engines that displaced 2.0 to 2.9 liters.
Sharing its drivetrain largely with the Giulia (952), the Stelvio has the trunk removed and a few inches of fat thrown in. As such, it handles worse and is less efficient, but some consumers have been convinced that this is the 21st-century way.
For most drivers, the diesel is the more robust option, while the V6-powered Quadrifoglio is a much superior alternative that will break down more often.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the Alfa Romeo Stelvio comes with double-wishbone at the front and multi-link at the rear. Combined with RWD, this setup provides one of the best handling characteristics and tuning capabilities.

Even in mid-range form, the Stelvio is agile, poised and grippy for a mid-sized SUV. It's got a slightly busy, firmish low-speed ride and, at least until you’re used to the directness and feel of the fast but muted steering, it’s not the most instinctive car to guide down the road. Wired smartphone mirroring for both Apple and Android handsets is standard through a USB 2.0 port.

Pros
  • Sleek looks and feel
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lacklustre low-speed performance
  • Slightly over-sensitive brake pedal

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The Stelvio Quadrifoglio sounds mean enough in Dynamic mode, but the gloves come off completely when Alfa’s DNA drive modes are dialled up to Race. Upshifts sound like gunshots and the engine truly roars, unlike many turbo units. Acceleration is almost violent at times, with a surprising lack of turbo lag that means the power is almost always available. It has the poise and body control of a car that sits much closer to the ground, so you can carry significant speed just about everywhere. Interior plastics don't quite gel with the asking price, especially compared with those of the German competition.

Pros
  • Class-leading handling
  • Powerful engine
  • Impressive handling
Cons
  • Pricier than rivals

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
Downsized and turbocharged this engine may be, but in the car’s more aggressive Dynamic mode – and even more so in all-systems-off Race – it delivers a truly devilish tune with rip-snorting upshifts. On the move it has the ability to make a Porsche Macan Turbo seem po-faced and at the kerbside it makes a BMW X5M look like a tragic try-hard.

Pros
  • Powerful twin-turbocharged engine
  • Impressive agility and security
Cons
  • Not the most fun to drive
  • Pricier than rivals

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The Stelvio Quadrifoglio is as remarkable now as it ever was. But for all of the excitement it can throw your way when you’re really in the mood, it remains a pretty uncompromising machine to simply run about in. For better or worse, Alfa is far more singular and approachable in its approach to building an SUV than any other manufacturer.

Pros
  • Gorgeous looks
  • Impressive performance
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Expensive for what’s on offer
  • Plastic interior

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
Many of the materials used in the cabin seem to be fashioned from fairly low-grade materials. It's roomy, too; there’s enough head- and legroom in the second row to ensure two adults will be able to sit in comfort over a longer journey. The 2.0-litre petrol engine, meanwhile, is impressively enthusiastic, if a little lacking on an outright sense of theatre.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Comfortable, well-built cabin
Cons
  • Lacklustre low-speed ride
  • No adaptive dampers

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The Stelvio is as dynamic as ever, with more handling charisma than you’ll find in many of its rivals. The infotainment display recessed into the dashboard stays at 8.8in, but now recognises touch inputs for the first time. The gear lever is now leather-wrapped, rather than plastic, and feels all the better for it. Adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist bring it up to par with the rest of the class, though the latter proved rather insistent on our Italian test route.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Improved infotainment system
  • Decent handling
Cons
  • Not the most refined of engines
  • Lacklustre ride quality

The Stelvio shares a platform with the Giulia saloon, and is part of a revival the brand is currently in the middle of to make it a viable alternative to the Germanic norm. The model range comprises of Super, Sprint, Lusso Ti and Veloce trims, while at the top is the Quadrifoglio version. All cars come in a standard five-door SUV body, although it's curvy enough that the lack of coupe-SUV in the line-up isn't an issue. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox are standard on all UK cars, the only exception being if you spec the 187bhp 2.2-litre diesel unit.

Pros
  • Sleek styling
  • Fastest petrol and diesel engines
Cons
  • No coupe-SUV in the line-up

The Stelvio Quadrifoglio is one of the most exciting SUVs money can buy. Power comes from a 2.9-litre twin turbocharged V6 engine sending 503bhp and 600Nm to all four wheels. The steering ratio is typically Alfa-quick, but the chassis is more than agile enough to match its response. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard, but infotainment feels a good few years behind the competition.

Pros
  • Gorgeous looks
  • Fantastic infotainment system
Cons
  • Fiddly to use
  • Not as fast as rivals

The Stelvio 280 is £1,400 pricier than the 207bhp diesel in the same Milano Edizione trim. On a four-year PCP with the same deposit, the petrol costs almost £20 more per month. The diesel is cheaper to run, too, returning 49.6mpg to the petrol's 35.8mpg. The 276bhp/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo unit is revvy, enthusiastic and offers smooth power delivery.

Pros
  • Fun to drive
  • Fantastic handling
Cons
  • Fiddly infotainment
  • Lack of roll

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Nero Edizione is our pick of the model range. It adds desirable equipment and some Quadrifoglio style for a small extra outlay. It's suitably spacious inside, and more fun to drive than its rivals. Thanks to generous finance deals, it comes out at just £7 more per month.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Lots of standard equipment
  • Decent cabin space
Cons
  • Pricier than Super
  • Some parts feel a bit cheap

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio has received a mild revamp visually and is basically the same car dynamically as before. But beneath the skin it now contains a lot more technology. It's also better styled and feels like a much higher-quality product inside. Its connectivity and overall specification have also improved. A good SUV made even better.

Pros
  • Better looks and feel
  • Improved infotainment system
Cons
  • Not as powerful as rivals
  • More expensive than rivals

Alfa Romeo does some of the most beautifully designed interiors in the business, and it's no different here. The quality is also impressive, although the Stelvio’s various infotainment systems have never been class-leading. It can’t offer the cabin space of some rivals, but there's room for four adults. The 2.0T 200 can tow just 1,600kg, but the 2.2d 180 RWD only manages 1,700kg.

Pros
  • Class-leading infotainment system
  • Powerful engines
  • Good standard equipment
Cons
  • Lack of space for four adults
  • Brake and clutch systems can’t match rivals

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio is a practical mid-sized SUV. There's loads of space up front, the cabin boasts plenty of storage for family life and there's a good-sized boot. Overall quality is good, but not quite as impressive as that found in a Mercedes or BMW. Mercedes and BMW each offer a three-year unlimited mile warranty.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
  • Decent standard equipment
Cons
  • Not as slick as rivals
  • Not as practical as rivals

The Stelvio costs a good chunk less than the Mercedes GLC and Audi Q5. Like the Jaguar, the interior gives you the sensation that you're in a sports car rather than an SUV. You sit closer to the road than in many alternatives, giving you a better feel of the car. The 525-litre boot is big enough for a week away with the family, but it's not the biggest in class.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Lots of standard equipment
Cons
  • Lack of infotainment
  • Not the most fun to drive

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio is the best sporty SUV to drive. It has a 503hp turbocharged 2.9-litre V6 petrol – derived from a Ferrari engine. The eight-speed automatic gearbox is a delight to use, as the large aluminium paddles behind the steering wheel are tactile. There's enough room in the back for two adults, but the middle seat is too tight.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Lots of standard equipment
Cons
  • Rearward visibility isn’t very good
  • Alternatives are more fun to drive
