Product Overview

Ferrari 488 (chassis F142M) is a mid-size sports car in production from 2015 to 2019. It was available with various tunes of Ferrari's bi-turbocharged F154 V8 engine that displaced 3.9 liters paired to a 7-speed DCT that sends power to the rear wheels.
Unfortunately, while the 458 lost the manual transmission, the 488 further lost Ferrari's legendary naturally-aspirated V8 engine. While the new bi-turbo unit makes a lot more torque and power, it is meaningless to those who enjoy their cars on the public road: the car is simply too powerful. The loss of character is truly lamentable.
Otherwise, the 488 can be considered an incremental update, as its chassis code F142M suggests (the 458 has chassis code F142, while the "M" means "modificata", or modified).

Reviewer score 96% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autocar have found:
New tyres have stiffer sidewalls, making the Pista less nervous and more stable. The reduction in kerb weight means that a car that was already willing to turn is now even more agile. Ferrari uses an e-differential, and its latest ‘side slip control’ program involves even more software. Peak torque – 568lb ft of it – comes in at just 3000rpm.
Pros
  • Powerful V8 engine
  • Fantastic handling
  • Impressive handling
Cons
  • No carpet or other soundproofing
  • No e-differential

Reviewers from autoexpress have found:
The 488 looks different to its 458 predecessor, but it's no more practical, thanks to its two-seater layout, front-mounted boot and a parcel tray behind the rear seats. As you'd expect, the 488 features a low-slung driving position, but there's plenty of seat and wheel adjustment. Large door mirrors and rear parking sensors take the strain out of parking – although reversing into a tight spot is still a nerve-wracking experience.
Pros
  • Powerful twin-turbo engine
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Fiddly layout
  • Not as practical as rivals

Reviewers from carmagazine have found:
The switch to turbocharging has been carried out much more effectively than on the California. Response is excellent, lag non-existent, and the mid-range is far, far stronger than the 458. Variable Torque Management means you don't feel tempted to short-shift, but to wind the engine right out. Our only complaint is the sports seats in our car were too firm and unsupportive.
Pros
  • Powerful V8
  • Punchy mid-range
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Not as powerful as the 488
  • Laggy throttle response

topgear[4]

Reviewer score 95% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from topgear have found:
The Ferrari 488 GTB is Ferrari's first turbo-assisted mid-engined car since the iconic F40. There's a 50 per centincrease in speed-generated downforce, up to 325kg of the stuff. Ferrari claims even faster gearchanges and even cleverer adaptivesuspension. It's like a 458, but way, way faster.
Pros
  • Bigger and more powerful than the 488 GTB
  • Lots of fun to drive
Cons
  • Pricier than the 458
  • Fiddly infotainment system
