Product Overview

Ferrari 458 (Type F142) is a mid-size sports car in production from 2009 to 2016. It was available with several tunes of Ferrari's F136 naturally-aspirated V8 engine that displaced 4.5 liters. Unfortunately, the gated manual transmission was discontinued, leaving a 7-speed DCT as the only transmission on offer.
Compared to the F430 that preceded it, the 458 not only lost the manual transmission but is also less elegant. Its long front overhang is also somewhat awkward.
Ferrari emphasizes the acceleration, speed, and handling of the 458, and the vehicle delivered. However, many find that the techno-filled performance is unnecessary for those who enjoy their cars on public roads; however, the loss of elegance is lamentable.

The new Ferrari 458 Italia is the replacement for the F430. It has a naturally aspirated 4.5-litre dry-sumped V8 that revs to a stratospheric 9000rpm. It can lap the Fiorano circuit in the same 1min 25sec as the stripped-out Scuderia.

62bhp at an astonishingly mellifluous 9000rpm and 398lb ft of torque, without so much as a whiff of superfluous supercharging or wildly threshing turbochargers. Loud enough to obviate passenger chat, consign rattles to aural oblivion and certainly loud enough to make the £3410 premium sound system optioned on my specimen utterly superfluous.

, and to spend a much greater amount of time on racetracks. Ferrari has taken 90kg out of the Speciale's kerbweight, partly with lightweight RTM bumpers, a Lexan rear window, thinner side glass and forged 20in alloys. The naturally aspirated V8 is unchanged at 4.5 litres, but it's been tuned with shorter inlet tracts, lighter pistons, higher valve lift and a new crankshaft.

There are no latches to undo to open or close the roof, no annoying lugagge cover to engage, you simply press and hold the button on the centre console. vertical rear window doubling as a wind deflector when the roof is stored, as on a BMW 6-series cabrio. You can even lower the rear window with the roof in place, giving you all the security, refinement and privacy of the coupe, but with a soundtrack only a Spider can provide.
