Product Overview

Land Rover Range Rover Velar (chassis code L560) is a mid-size crossover in production from 2017 to 2020, whereupon it received a facelift. It was available with a range of inline-4, V6, and V8 engines that displaced 2.0 to 5.0 liters.
Slotted above the RR Evoque but below the RR Sport, the RR Velar is the fourth vehicle to bear the Range Rover name, all but the original derivative models. The Velar was only briefly available with the JLR Supercharged V8, which is rather sweet, unfortunately, before its cancellation. Otherwise, it is a disappointing vehicle drivetrain-wise.
Those who drive offroad, for work or leisure, will be surprised to find that the crossover has reasonable approach, departure, and breakover angles.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The standard Velar is already well regarded for its beauty, so changes to the styling have been carefully made. The SVAD gets new bumpers: in front they incorporate a more prominent splitter, extra lower air intakes and a new, higher airflow grille. Interior changes are similarly carefully judged. Land Rover designers are proud of their car’s minimalist philosophy, and in the SVAD this is maintained.

JLR's Ingenium diesel engine has just 177bhp with which to do it. Motorway overtakes are dispatched without too much drama. It feels responsive enough around town, although the automatic gearbox isn’t particularly quick to drop down when attempting to fill gaps in traffic. Capable, but unsurprisingly not to the extent of the more powerful engines found elsewhere in the line-up.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The Velar has so far needed six cylinders to make a convincing case for itself and stand out in the competitive luxury SUV category. But that could change with the introduction of the four-cylinder petrol-engined P300 tested here. On the road, it’s difficult to escape the impression that this engine's 296bhp is delivered with too much of a burbling presence to be considered truly cultivated.

It’s unashamedly the most car-based model Land Rover has yet made. Long, low, sleek styling and low-slung driving position. Price tag starts with a six (well, a seven by the time you add up the options on our year-old, 10,000-mile test car)

Pros
  • Sleek, modern styling
  • Excellent range-topping V6
Cons
  • Expensive compared to rivals

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The Velar is a refined cruiser, with wind and engine noise well suppressed. The cabin can't quite match a full-spec Range Rover for accommodation, but there's much more space than in the baby Evoque. It isn't quite as sharp in corners as the X4, and it wouldn't be anywhere near as much fun on a back road as the (admittedly petrol-only) Porsche Macan.

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
The Velar is a beautifully designed and (mostly) finely wrought car. The range starts at just under £45,000 for the 2.0 diesel (0-60 in a little under 9.0 sec) The cabin is beautifully trimmed in a mixture of perforated leather, suede-like Alcantara, carbon appliqué and piano black wood. The Meridian sound system is superb.

Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Supercharged V6 feels fast
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Awkward ride
  • No Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
