Product Overview

BMW X3 M F97 is a high-performance compact crossover in production from 2019 to 2021. It was available with two tunes of S58 turbocharged inline-6 petrol engine that displaced 3.0 liters.
The first X3 to join the BMW M lineup, the F97 X3 M adds some relatively subtle visual cues while greatly up-rating the output of the standard B58B30 engine. This is partly thanks to a new twin-turbo setup.
Owners may find that at speed the vehicle consumes a lot more than the numbers indicate, thanks to a disappointing 0.36 coefficient of drag to show for it.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the BMW X3 M comes with double-wishbone at the front and multi-link at the rear.

External Reviews

autocar[1]

Reviewer score 57% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from autocar have found:
Twin-turbocharged S58 does an uncanny impression of a naturally aspirated motor, with none of the mid-range shove exhibited by its rivals. Handling is as precise as you’d expect from a car wearing an M badge, with the kind of grip and body control that lets you drive with real conviction. Quilted seats sculpted to keep you in place through the corners, but more enveloping over long distances than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio’s carbonfibre-backed buckets.
Pros
  • Powerful twin-turbo V6
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Poor ride quality
  • Damped suspension

Reviewers from autoexpress have found:
In Competition spec the X3 M serves up 503bhp and 600Nm of torque. This is the same output as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and the V8-engined Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S. The new engine is the most powerful straight-six ever concocted for an M car, enabling 0-62mph in just 4.1 seconds.
Pros
  • Powerful straight-six
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Too lazy for the motor
  • Not the most fun to drive

carmagazine[3]

Reviewers from carmagazine have found:
The BMW X3 M rides stiffly across most road surfaces. On the big rims, it just lacks some of the pliancy needed to cope with broken blacktop. It's not unusable but those after a powerful, everyday X3 will be better served by one of the faster models in the standard range.
Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Powerful engine
  • Comfortable ride
Cons
  • Lack of pliancy on big rims
  • No two-wheel drive

cnet[4]

Reviewer score 68% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cnet have found:
The 2020 BMW X3 M Competition is an absolute blast to drive. It's still 4,620 pounds of fun on public roads, but you really need a track. The suspension, even in its Comfort setting, is firmer than many cars' Sport setting. The firm ride also creates more road noise.
Pros
  • Gorgeous interior
  • Fun to drive
  • Excellent infotainment tech
Cons
  • Loud, bumpy cabin
  • M Sport seats are too firm for a daily driver
