Product Overview

Mercedes-Benz S-class W220 facelift is a full-size luxury sedan in production from 2002 to 2005. It was available with a range of V6, V8, V12, and inline-6 engines that displaced 3.2 to 6.0 liters.
With this facelift, Mercedes started to get its act together again. The horrendous M137 engine was replaced by the splendid M275 bi-turbo V12 engine that, in some form, survived for the next two decades as one of the most powerful V12 engines in the automotive industry. For good measure, Mercedes also threw in the wonderful 5.4L supercharged V8 (M113K) in the form of S55 AMG (L). Even the body corrosion issue was starting to get addressed, though the final solution came towards the end of the production run with Mercedes galvanizing the steel panels.
One mixed development was the introduction of AWD (4MATIC) in the facelift W220. While a good point for marketing teams and influencers, it is unnecessary for performance or safety, the latter being the ridiculous talking point often brought up by advertisers: AWD is only good for getting the vehicle up to speed in slippery road conditions; it doesn't help with steering or braking one bit---indeed, AWD negatively affects steering and braking (due to added weight), and is therefore more dangerous.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the W220 comes with multi-link suspensions at all four corners. This provides the best cornering performance and tunability, at the expense of cost and a little bit of durability.
