Product Overview

BMW M5 F90 is a high-performance executive sedan in production from 2017 to 2020, whereupon it received a facelift. It is powered by an S63 bi-turbo V8 paired with ZF 8HP automatic transmission and, for the first time in M5 history, AWD. The F90 M5 is based on the G30 5 Series.
The S63B44 engine found in the F90 is roughly the same found in the F10 M5, though BMW predictably increased the boost and squeezed out more power.
Unfortunately, the F90 M5 has notably more generic styling.
On the plus side, it uses, like the F10, double-wishbone + multi-link suspension setup for rather good handling.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The M5 is a four-wheel-drive super saloon of amazing real-world pace, range and finesse. On the track and at the limit of its grip, meanwhile, the standout feature of the M5’s showing is how balanced, nuanced and interactive its handling is. The car is surefooted and supremely stable, hitting big speeds in the blink of an eye and ultimately making them feel small.

Pros
  • Superb handling
  • Impressive range
  • Superb infotainment system
Cons
  • Too many configurable systems
  • Not the most comfortable to drive

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The M5 Competition turns up the excitement and involvement where you’d want it to. It’s well balanced, it steers quickly and keenly, and its four-wheel-drive system feels predominantly rear biased. Ride comfort doesn’t feel like it has taken too much of a dive – although if you make the adjustable dampers any firmer than Comfort on the road, you're bolder than I am.

Pros
  • Great fun to drive
  • Excellent handling
Cons
  • Not a sports saloon
  • Not a fun car to drive

autocar[3]

Reviewer score 70%
Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
There's plenty of uncompromising focus about the M5 Competition’s ride, which, although comfortable enough on good surfaces, gets quite tetchy and firm, and occasionally hyperactive, on uneven cross-country roads. You do get more rigid engine mounts, though, which not only improve throttle response, but also deliver enhanced steering response. So, when you account for everything you’re getting, the £6500 premium that BMW asks over a regular M5 is probably not such a bad deal.

Pros
  • Sleek, sporty styling
  • Impressive handling
  • Lots of fun to drive
Cons
  • More expensive than regular M5

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
You can select from pre-programmed variants. Or you can pick your own set-up and programme that into two discrete red levers on the steering wheel. The M5 has a carbonfibre roof to reduce weight and make it lower. It relies on deploying 592bhp in great unhurried strides to deliver the visceral excitement.

Pros
  • Brilliant engine
  • Impressive range
  • Excellent handling
Cons
  • No automatic gearbox
  • Expensive for what you get

autoexpress[5]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The BMW M5 Competition demands a £6,500 premium over the standard M5. Externally, the car is identified by its gloss black badges and new 20-inch forged alloy wheels. Under the bonnet the familiar twin-turbo V8 is massaged to deliver 616bhp. While torque remains unchanged, the 750Nm peak is hardly soft.

Pros
  • Powerful V8
  • Comfortable ride
  • Impressive handling
Cons
  • A little fiddly at low speed

autoexpress[6]

Reviewer score 87%
Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The M5 is bigger all round than its predecessor, and this translates into more room for passengers and a small increase in boot volume. Owners will also enjoy the M upgrades over the standard 5 Series inside, starting with the luxurious multi-adjustable sports seats and the double-spoke M design steering wheel. You also get an M setting on the head-up display, and the instrument pack is configured especially for the M5 too.

Pros
  • Bigger boot
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Good standard equipment
Cons
  • No 4x4 tech
  • Tight transmission tunnel
