Product Overview

Nikon Coolpix P950 is a 1/2.3" compact camera with a large zoom range. Introduced by Nikon in 2020, it comes with a 1/2.3" sensor with 16 MP (4608 x 3456) resolution and a 2.36 million-dot EVF.
The camera has a poor battery life, and a second or third battery may be needed to get you through the day. The Coolpix P950's 7.0 fps burst rate limits its use for certain types of photography, but it is hardly something that most photographers should worry about.
The P950 comes with a fully articulated display. Those who intend to use the Nikon Coolpix P950 for video work will be glad to find that the camera comes with 5.5 stops of IBIS. Nikon has endowed this compact camera with a 83.3x zoom lens, which can be quite useful for travels. Last but not least, the camera can focus quite close to the subject.

External Reviews

dpreview[1]

Reviewer score 82% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from dpreview have found:
The P950's video feature set is competitive, without being particularly outstanding. At its maximum quality settings, you can record video footage at 4K, at 30p, with the option of 25p (sadly not 24p) and Full HD capture at 60, 30 and 25p. A microphone jack is provided, but there's no headphone jack for active audio monitoring.
Pros
  • Extremely wide zoom range
  • Excellent image stabilization
  • Superb image quality
Cons
  • No telephoto zoom
  • No built-in microphone

pcmag[2]

Reviewer score 80% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
You'll get the best images out of the P950 by keeping its aperture wide open. Smaller f-stops, down to f/8, are available, but show less resolution. Video has been upgraded, with 4K capture now available at 30fps. We'd also like to see a touch screen and a current-generation USB-C interface.
Pros
  • Excellent image quality
  • Excellent telezoom performance
  • 4K video and 4K video
Cons
  • Lacks in-camera noise reduction
  • No touch screen

rtings[3]

Reviewer score 19% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from rtings have found:
The Nikon COOLPIX P950 is a poor choice for travel photography. Its large size and weight make it cumbersome to take with you on the go. It also has a bad autofocus system that struggles to maintain focus on moving subjects. On the upside, its image quality is good overall, and it has very good battery life.
Pros
  • Good overall image quality
  • Very good battery life
  • Great dynamic range
  • Well-built and portable design
  • Excellent video stabilization performance
Cons
  • Large size and weight
  • Slow continuous shooting speed
  • Disappointing autofocus performance
