Product Overview

Canon PowerShot SX740 HS is an entry-level 1/2.3" compact camera with a large zoom range. Introduced by Canon in 2018, it comes with a 1/2.3" sensor with 21 MP (5184 x 3888) resolution.
The camera has a poor battery life, and a second or third battery may be needed to get you through the day. The 10.0 fps burst rate serves enthusiasts well enough, though some professionals may find it limiting.
Canon has endowed this compact camera with a 40x zoom lens, which can be quite useful for travels. Last but not least, the camera can focus quite close to the subject.

External Reviews

techradar[1]

Reviewer score 58% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techradar have found:
The PowerShot SX740 HS is something of a mixed bag. It's a little cheaper than its rivals, but nowhere near as well specified. Image quality is good for a camera with such a small sensor, although some of this is down to how the camera processes images. Video quality isn't too bad, although rolling shutter is an issue. If you're not fussed about video quality, the older SX730 HS isn't quite as good.
Pros
  • Good image quality
  • Decent battery life
Cons
  • No raw shooting
  • No touchscreen

tomsguide[2]

Reviewer score 81% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from tomsguide have found:
The SX740 HS is the first Canon PowerShot to feature 4K video. Video quality is similarly quite good, with sharp focus and pleasing colors. Wi-Fi and mobile app Canon's Camera Connect has one of the easiest-to-use and most feature-rich mobile apps for iOS and Android.
Pros
  • Excellent image stabilization
  • 4K video
  • Built-in viewfinder
Cons
  • Limited low-light performance
  • No optical viewfinder
