Product Overview

Canon PowerShot SX70 HS is a 1/2.3" compact camera with a large zoom range. Introduced by Canon in 2018, it comes with a 1/2.3" sensor with 20 MP (5184 x 3888) resolution and a 2.36 million-dot EVF.
The camera has a poor battery life, and a second or third battery may be needed to get you through the day. The 10.0 fps burst rate serves enthusiasts well enough, though some professionals may find it limiting.
The PowerShot SX70 HS comes with a fully articulated display and 9 autofocus points. Those who intend to use the SX70 HS for video work will be glad to find that the camera comes with 5 stops of IBIS. Canon has endowed this compact camera with a 65x zoom lens, which can be quite useful for travels. Last but not least, the camera can focus quite close to the subject.

External Reviews

pcmag[1]

Reviewer score 71% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The SX70 HS gains 4K video, absent from the older SX60 HS, but it's not something you can use unless you really want to. Audio quality is as good as you can expect from a built-in mic. The SX70 does a good job picking up voices, but also captures a lot of ambient sound.
Pros
  • Compact, lightweight design
  • Excellent telephoto performance
  • 4K video
Cons
  • No telephoto zoom
  • No touch screen

rtings[2]

Reviewer score 23% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from rtings have found:
The Canon PowerShot SX70 HS is okay for travel photography. It's not especially portable, but it's relatively lightweight and feels comfortable to use. Autofocus performance is decent, especially with tracking objects. However, the camera doesn't perform well in low light, as sharpness declines significantly at higher ISO levels.
Pros
  • Lightweight and comfortable to use
  • Excellent dynamic range
  • Great continuous shooting speed
  • Decent image stabilization performance
  • Lightweight & comfortable to wear
  • Good continuous shooting speeds
Cons
  • Sub-par battery life
  • Bulky design
  • Poor video quality
  • No weather-sealing

techradar[3]

Reviewer score 74% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techradar have found:
Canon's PowerShot SX70 HS is an excellent alternative to DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. The 3-inch LCD has 922k dots and can be twisted to face the front. The depth of the grip and the space on the rear for the thumb makes it a perfectly comfortable camera to hold. Image stabilisation system does a very good job to keep the feed as stable as possible.
Pros
  • Excellent build quality
  • Excellent autofocus system
  • Excellent image stabilisation
Cons
  • No touchscreen
  • No built-in flash

trustedreviews[4]

Reviewer score 66% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from trustedreviews have found:
The SX70 HS is a very competent performer in most situations. Autofocus speeds are generally very good throughout the focal range. The image stabilisation system also does a noticeably good job at steadying the feed when composing images. The level of detail in images very much appears to depend on what focal length you’re using.
Pros
  • Zippy autofocus
  • Excellent electronic viewfinder
  • Excellent image stabilisation system
Cons
  • Limited zoom range
