Product Overview

Nikon D3500 is an entry-level DSLR camera in the Nikon F-mount system. Introduced by Nikon in 2018, it comes with an APS-C sensor with 24 MP (6000 x 4000) resolution.
The camera has an excellent battery life, and you may just get away without a second battery. The Nikon D3500's 5.0 fps burst rate limits its use for certain types of photography, but it is hardly something that most photographers should worry about.
The D3500 comes with 11 autofocus points.

External Reviews

dpreview[1]

Reviewer score 52% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from dpreview have found:
The D3500 is a very capable and affordable camera for beginners and young families. It does a fine job capturing 'candids' and other casual shots. Although the Guide Mode can be incredibly helpful for new photographers, we didn't find the camera quite as dependable as we'd like. The 24-megapixel sensor and EXPEED 4 image processor make for high-quality frames.
Pros
  • Fantastic image quality
  • Good battery life
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • No touch-screen
  • No LCD screen
  • Limited autofocus

pcmag[2]

Reviewer score 69% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The D3500 is a fine choice for quick family video clips and home movies. It's many times better than Canon's low-cost starter model, the EOS Rebel T7. If you want a more modern, capable camera for video, consider the Sony a6400 or Fujifilm X-T20.
Pros
  • Excellent image quality
  • Fast autofocus
  • Tilting LCD
Cons
  • No in-body stabilization
  • No touch controls

rtings[3]

Reviewer score 35% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from rtings have found:
The Nikon D3500 is decent for travel photography. Images are sharp and relatively low in graininess even at relatively high ISO levels. Its wide shutter speed range should suit both long-exposure photography as well as still images of moving subjects. However, its autofocus system struggles to maintain focus on faces and moving objects.
Pros
  • Sharp and relatively low in graininess
  • Decently comfortable to use
  • Wide shutter speed range
  • Great video stabilization capability
  • Good video stabilization capabilities
Cons
  • Bulky design
  • Can't record in 4k
  • No microphone or headphone jacks
  • Disappointing autofocus performance in FHD

t3[4]

Reviewer score 63% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from t3 have found:
The Nikon D3500 has a 24.2 million pixel effective resolution and Nikon's EXPEED 4 image processor. It offers access to Full HD video, at capture speeds up to a cinematic looking 59.94fps. There is a 3-inch 921K-dot resolution LCD screen if switching the camera to Live View mode. Bluetooth connectivity allows us to send images to a smartphone, as well as use a handset as a remote control.
Pros
  • Gorgeous 24.2 million pixel image sensor
  • Excellent battery life
Cons
  • No built-in microphone
  • No 4K video

techradar[5]

Reviewer score 73% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techradar have found:
The D3500 retains the same effective 24.2MP pixel count as the old D3400, but this is a newer sensor. There's no Wi-Fi connectivity, but you do get Bluetooth, so it's possible to transfer images via Nikon's SnapBridge feature. Most people looking at this beginner camera will choose to get the 18-55mm lens that's bundled with the camera for a few more dollars or pounds.
Pros
  • Compact, compact design
  • Wide-angle viewfinder
  • Fingerprint sensor
Cons
  • No touchscreen
  • No 3.0-inch display

tomsguide[6]

Reviewer score 77% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from tomsguide have found:
The Nikon D3500 delivers consistently good pictures with colors that are well-saturated. Battery life has been improved by about 350 shots per charge to 1,550 on the D35000. Snapbridge app allows you to choose the resolution (full or 2 megapixel for faster transfer)
Pros
  • Excellent image quality
  • Easy to use
  • Excellent battery life
Cons
  • Slow Wi-Fi
  • No wireless charging
