Product Overview

Onkyo TX-NR696 is a midrange 7.2-channel network AV receiver. It comes with a large number of standard I/O options and supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X surround sound.
Thanks to not only WiFi 5 and LAN but also Bluetooth connectivity, the TX-NR696 is able to support all modern network streaming services, including Sonos, Spotify, and Deezer, etc. It is also able to stream directly from mobile devices.
In terms of physical connections, the TX-NR696 offers all that one would expect from a modern AV receiver. It has 7 HDMI inputs and 2 HDMI outputs, 4 RCA inputs, and a phono (Moving Magnet) input. Hence, in an affordable chassis Onkyo has packed all that one would need.
Being an affordable model, the TX-NR696 lacks balanced inputs, and its DAC and amplifying circuitry are consumer grade. Still, budget-conscious consumers are better off spending more on the speakers than the receiver as a general rule, and this receiver is a good option with a lot of features for not a lot of money.
The TX-NR696 is the successor to the TX-NR686 from 2018, which is almost identical, but which has component video support.
A few other receivers by Onkyo from 2019 include the TX-SR393, TX-SR494, TX-RZ740, TX-RZ840, and TX-RZ3400.

Reviewers from cnet have found:
The Onkyo TX-NR696 is the brand's new mid-level offering, and it's a winner. The '696 packs a high level of performance and a fully loaded feature set at a relatively affordable price. The Denon AVR-750H sounds a bit better with music and costs a bit less, making it a solid second choice.
Pros
  • Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Dolby Vision support
  • Full-featured feature set
Cons
  • No direct replacement in 2019
