Sonus faber Maxima Amator
Floorstanding LoudspeakerProduct Gallery
Product Overview
Sonus faber Maxima Amator is the first floorstanding loudspeaker in the company's Heritage collection. Unlike Electa and Minima, which pay homage to classic models released decades ago, the Maxima Amator is a completely new speaker that nevertheless shares the same design language.
Several highlights include the Port Saint Laurent marble chosen for the base of the speaker, the separate crossover cabinet section that is partly visible from the rear panel, and the wooden rear section of the tweeter that is can be seen from the rear vent à la Electa Amator III. Like the other two models, brass is also used as trim pieces, while leather is prominently featured on the fascia.
Driver-wise, the Maxima and the Electa are alike. The tweeter features Sonus faber's DAD, Damped Apex Dome, technology, while the mid-woofer is a paper cone with die-cast aluminum basket.

Reviewer score 90% (normalized by Neofiliac)Maxima Amators are elegant, class-styled loudspeakers for equally refined, classically-themed recordings. Think of them as compact standmounts built into a floorstanding frame and you will not go far wrong. They do sound as gorgeous as they look, provided you realise the limits of what is essentially a standmount design writ large.
Pros
- Gorgeous, refined sound
- Superb build quality
Cons
- Not the one-stop solution for rockers
parttimeaudiophile[2]
Reviewer score 92% (normalized by Neofiliac)Despite their diminutive two-way tower, the Amators had a confident sense of scope. They could deliver a giant soundstage with deep, satisfying bass in a rather large room. The Amators also excelled at soundstage width, something I don't usually obsess over. There’s an organic wholeness to the sound.
Pros
- Deep, satisfying bass
- Solid wood enclosure
- Excellent build quality
Cons
- Bass could be boomy if placed close to a wall

Reviewer score 89% (normalized by Neofiliac)The Maxima Amator is a third order, 18dB/octave type which reduces the overlap between drivers. Its components are visible to all through a clear window in the back of the cabinet which is a first. The drive units consist of a 28mm tweeter with a damped apex dome, neodymium magnet system and a rear chamber made from solid spruce wood.
Pros
- Gorgeous, detailed sound
- Impressive build quality
- Solid build and finish
Cons
- Expensive for what it offers
- No tube amplification
