Product Overview

BMW iX is a fully electric mid-size crossover based on the company's CLAR platform. It shares design elements with both the X3 and X5 in BMW's current lineup but has many unique aspects.
At launch, the iX is available with two drivetrain options, including a 523hp dual-motor xDrive50 version with the same dual-motor setup found in the i4 M50 unveiled at the same time. It accelerates to 100km/h from standing still in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 200km/h. The other option has a less potent dual-motor setup that nevertheless delivers 630Nm of peak torque.
Unlike it is the case with the i4, the iX xDrive40 has a smaller battery than the one found in the xDrive50. It also supports DC charging at 150kW, while the xDrive50 is compatible with 200kW DC charging. An M60 model is also forthcoming.
Apart from these EV-only characteristics, the i4 is largely a mirror image of the ICE-powered X3 and X5. Some of the feature highlights include a large 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display operating BMW's new iDrive system, a large set of driver assistance functions, and the extensive use of recyclable or recycled materials.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The xDrive50 is underpinned by a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear steel suspension with BMW’s lift-related dampers as standard. Air springs and adaptive dampers, like those fitted to our test car, are available as an option. An ability to charge at rates of up to 200kW from a DC system gives the iX a distinct advantage over the I-Pace, Model X and Mercedes-Benz EQC.

Pros
  • Powerful powertrain
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Impressive range
Cons
  • No AC charging
  • Limited range

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
BMW's third BEV is a big SUV, nearly five metres long, two metres wide and 1.7 metres tall. There’s a huge screen across the dashboard centre, but the rotary infotainment controller remains, only now created from what looks like crystal glass and sited on a tall, wood-finished console. The seat controls have migrated to the doors (not sure why), which are luxuriously padded, and the steering wheel is sufficiently weirdly shaped.

Pros
  • Superb looks
  • Superb infotainment
  • Lots of fun to drive
Cons
  • It’s a big SUV
  • The steering wheel is weirdly shaped
  • You can’t pick normal round instruments

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
From launch, the iX is available in either xDrive40 or range-topping xDrive50 guise, priced from £69,905 and £91,905 respectively. Both models use an electric motor on the front and rear axles. The iX can feel wayward when nearing the limit on a tight road, and it can't hide its mass under braking. But it's the new underpinnings that impress most.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Impressive range
  • Comfortable ride
Cons
  • Expensive for what it offers

autoexpress[4]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
BMW launched its iX3 electric SUV earlier this year, but it was adapted from a combustion-engined car, like Audi’s e-tron and Mercedes’ EQC models. Now we have the iX, which is based on a dedicated EV platform – and we’ve driven the affordable iX xDrive40 model in the UK. Affordable is a relative term, because in M Sport trim (Sport is the only other option) it still costs £72,905.

Pros
  • Impressive range
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent tech
Cons
  • No Plug-in Car Grant
  • Lack of range

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
At just under five metres long it's a big machine that offers plenty of space inside, thanks to a three-metre wheelbase. Packaging is good and passengers will have plenty of room, plus with no transmission tunnel to get in the way of feet. The mid-spec xDrive50 model features a 105.2kWh battery, which offers a claimed range of up to 380 miles.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Expensive for what it offers
  • No transmission tunnel

carmagazine[6]

Reviewer score 76%
Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
With 516hp and 564lb ft, the iX is fast, and of course it does 0-62mph in 4.6sec. But there is very much an aura of the closet loon about this car – you know, the sort who barely says a word at work but goes totally bananas at parties. BMW refers to the motors and batteries as Gen5 (Gen1 going all the way back to the BMW Concept ActiveE of 2009)
Find the original article here.
Pros
  • Superb electric power
  • Lots of safety kit
  • Great range
Cons
  • Not the most fun to drive

digitaltrends[7]

Reviewer score 81%
Reviewers from digitaltrends have found the following***:
The iX is quiet, smooth, and linear to drive regardless of whether it's in a crowded urban center or on the German autobahn. Charging the pack takes 11 hours at 11 kilowatts, but it can be replenished from 10% to 80% in 40 minutes with a 195-kilowatt DC fast charger. Front seats are almost armchair-like in terms of comfort, and forward visibility is excellent.

Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Fantastic infotainment system
Cons
  • Lacklustre range
