Dell refreshed the XPS 8940 for 2021 with 11th-gen Intel Rocket Lake processors and introduced the option of NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 3070 and AMD's RX 5700XT graphics. It otherwise retains features and designs of the 2020 XPS 8940.

Like the original XPS 8940, this desktop is a size-down from previous XPS desktop models. At the same time, the tool-less chassis offers a range of expandability options. Notably, an unusual number of graphics card options are available, spanning three generations of NVIDIA's recent GPUs plus AMD's latest.

The XPS 8940 can be configured with a 500W power supply. There are also four storage bays and three expansion slots that are left open.

While previously the XPS 8940 Special Edition (in Mineral White) had higher powered components, now its only difference from the standard XPS 8940 is the color.
