Product Overview

LG SP9YA is a premium soundbar with wireless subwoofer. It can be considered a merger of the SP7Y with the SP8YA, bringing the former's side virtual surround drivers and the latter's front height ones in a virtual 5.1.2-channel setup.
It is the successor to the SN9YG from 2020.
Like other 2021 LG soundbars that do not come with rear speakers, the SP9YA can be complemented by LG's SPK8 wireless rear speakers to reproduce an authentic surround sound experience. Still, those who had this in mind may be better served with the SP11RA, as the latter has more powerful drivers, and its rear speakers have up-firing Dolby Atmos channels.
In terms of sound processing, the SP9YA supports about the fullest set. It also comes with support for Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Apple AirPlay 2.

Reviewers from rtings have found:
The LG SP9YA is great for mixed usage. With its room correction feature, it offers a very neutral, balanced sound profile suitable for listening to lots of different types of audio content. It comes with lots of sound customization features, including bass and treble adjustments as well as EQ presets. While it supports Atmos and surround content, it doesn't offer a very immersive listening experience.
Pros
  • Very neutral, balanced sound profile
  • Lots of sound customization features
Cons
  • Doesn't support Atmos and surround content
  • Lacks discrete speakers

Reviewer score 82% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techhive have found:
LG's SP9YA soundbar doesn't emphasize high- and low-end sound at the expense of the mid-range. The soundbar's low-frequency effects sounded a little boomy at first. The side-firing drivers delivered a more muted response when it came to surround effects.
Pros
  • Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Dolby Vision surround effects
  • Sleek design
Cons
  • Bass sounds a little boomy at first
  • Side drivers don’t add much to overall sound
