Product Overview

LG SP8YA is a midrange 3.1.2-channel soundbar with wireless subwoofer. It can be considered a variant of the SP7Y in the same 2021 LG soundbar lineup: With the same number of drivers, the SP8YA has a more robust build and is marginally larger. While the SP7Y has side virtual surround drivers, the SP8YA trades them for front height drivers.
It is the successor to the SN8YG from 2020.
Like other 2021 LG soundbars that do not come with rear speakers, the SP8YA can be complemented by LG's SPK8 wireless rear speakers to reproduce an authentic surround sound experience.
In terms of sound processing, the SP8YA supports DTS:X on as well as Meridian Audio Technology. It also comes with support for Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Apple AirPlay 2.
Other soundbar in LG's 2021 lineup include the 3.1.2-channel SPD7Y, the 5.1.2-channel SP9YA, and the range-topping 7.1.4-channel SP11RA.

Reviewers from rtings have found:
The LG SP8YA is very good for mixed usage. With its room correction feature turned on, it offers a bass-heavy sound profile. There are also lots of sound customization features available, and it supports Dolby Atmos content. However, it has to downmix surround content into stereo to play it, which doesn't sound very immersive.
Pros
  • Bass-heavy sound profile
  • Lots of wireless playback options
  • Supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X
Cons
  • Downmixes surround content into stereo
  • Doesn't sound very immersive

Reviewer score 73% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from whathifi have found:
The SP8YA has fewer channels and less power than its flagship sibling. It doesn't feel like a massive step down, and there's actually more focus and punch to action scenes. The rear surrounds could be an easy way to improve its immersive abilities. There are better Dolby Atmos performers, such as the Sonos Arc and the Dali Katch One.
Pros
  • Gorgeous, expansive soundstage
  • Dolby Atmos and HDR10+ support
Cons
  • Not as precise as Sonos Arc
