Laowa 50mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro APO lens is a super macro lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. It is able to deliver a 2:1 maximum magnification ratio with a minimum focusing distance of just 13.5cm.
This lens largely shares the optical formula of the 65mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO lens for APS-C. However, the entire package is miniaturized for the smaller image circle of an MFT camera. In its place, Laowa manages to add electronics, a first for lenses from the Chinese manufacturer.
As such, not only is EXIF data transmitted to the camera but the photographer can also let the camera automatically control the aperture, which may be useful, for example, when shooting in shutter priority mode.
Weighing under 1/4 of a kilo, the 50mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO is very easy to carry around. The 2X maximum magnification is a great feature that many macro-minded photographers would appreciate.
Moreover, this 50mm f/2.8 lens has an apochromatic design, which minimizes chromatic aberrations across the frame. This feature makes the lens more usable in scenes where there is strong contrast and enhances the micro contrast that it is able to deliver.
