Product Overview

Dell XPS 17 9710 is the 2021-iteration of Dell's popular 17-inch laptop. Similar to the 15.6-inch 9510 unveiled at the same time, the 9710 improves its identically-designed predecessor with two main upgrades: CPU and GPU.
The 9710 is now available with 11th-gen Intel Tiger Lake H-series processors. This allows the new XPS 17 to upgrade its Thunderbolt ports to Thunderbolt 4 and to support PCIe 4 SSD and DDR4-3200.
In terms of GPU, the XPS 17 9710 now features RTX 30-series graphics, a significant upgrade from the RTX 2060 from last year. While the RTX 3050 / 3060 configurable are the entry options, they still offer significant bump in performance over the RTX 20-series.
Compared to the XPS 15 9510, the XPS 17 9710 is configurable to Intel's flagship Core i9-11980HK CPU, and its RTX 30-series graphics run at higher power levels.
Just like its 15.6-inch sister, the new XPS 17 is Thunderbolt / USB-C only. It also has only an HD webcam.

laptopmag[1]

Reviewer score 85% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from laptopmag have found:
The Dell XPS 17 can play AAA titles at a solid framerate. The laptop's 720p webcam is passable for video conferencing. There is some bloatware courtesy of Microsoft in the form of Twitter, Fishdom and Cooking Fever. If you're looking for an ultra-light system with endurance, the LG Gram 17 is your laptop.
Pros
  • Gorgeous 16:10 display
  • Bright, vivid display
  • Comfortable keyboard
Cons
  • Battery life could be better
  • Lackluster speakers

notebookcheck[2]

Reviewer score 89% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from notebookcheck have found:
XPS 17 9710 is the more optimized model that the original XPS 17 9700 should have been. Audio quality is more balanced than on most other laptops as exemplified by the relatively flat pink noise curve. The Dell system will ship with a 90 W USB-C AC adapter instead of 130 W if configured with no GeForce graphics. Other smaller updates like the Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 4 ports are nice additions.
Pros
  • Higher-than-average performance for a 17.3-inch laptop
  • Faster than last year's XPS 17 9700
  • Decent battery life
Cons
  • No Thunderbolt 4
  • No Thunderbolt 3

pcmag[3]

Reviewer score 90% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The Dell XPS 17 is a sleek, powerful notebook with enough graphics capability for all but the most intense 3D games. It uses a massive 97-watt-hour battery to meet the demands of its power-hungry CPU, GPU, and 4K screen. It's a refreshing alternative to bulky 17-inch gaming rigs and a better buy than Apple's 16-inch MacBook Pro.
Pros
  • Gorgeous 17-inch 4K display
  • Excellent performance for demanding 3D games
  • Comfortable keyboard and touchpad
  • Excellent battery life
Cons
  • Battery life could be better
  • No Thunderbolt 3 port

t3[4]

Reviewer score 90% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from t3 have found:
The XPS 17 gets very warm when gaming, and the fans make a noise like an idling hovercraft. There are four Thunderbolt 4 ports: two on either side of the body. On the right side is a headphone socket and an SD Card slot. There is no HDMI or USB-A port, but an adapter that plugs into a Thunderbolt 4 port and adds one of each is included.
Pros
  • Big screen
  • Great performance
  • Great battery life
Cons
  • No Thunderbolt 4 ports

techradar[5]

Reviewer score 88% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techradar have found:
For a 17-inch laptop, the Dell XPS 17 is incredibly small. It measures just 0.77 inches thick and weighs just 5.34 lbs (2.42 kg) All you get is four Thunderbolt 4 ports, an audio jack and an SD card slot. The laptop straight up isn't thick enough for anything else to fit on the chassis.
Pros
  • Stunning 4K display
  • Excellent battery life
  • Excellent performance
Cons
  • No SD card slot

tomshardware[6]

Reviewer score 82% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from tomshardware have found:
The Dell XPS 17 starts at $1,518 and can run as high as $3,733 depending on which parts you choose for it. The Core i7 version of this laptop is definitely the most customizable, with RAM capacities ranging from 16GB to 32GB. It's also got both FHD and 4K screen options, plus lets you choose between an RTX 3050 or RTX 3060 GPU. If you can afford it and want a machine that can do a little bit of everything, the Dell Xps 17 is an easy pick.
Pros
  • Stunning 16:10 display
  • Sleek design
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • Lacks built-in presets for different use cases
  • No Thunderbolt 3 port
