Product Overview

The 2021 Gigabyte AERO 17 HDR XD and YD are ultra-thin laptops designed for content creators. Sharing much of the same design and feature set of the XC/YC AERO 17 HDR models unveiled just months ago at CES 2021, the new models are refreshed with 11th-gen Intel Tiger Lake processors and bring with it a range of improvements.
Aesthetically, too, the engravings on the top lid have changed, which is the only obvious difference.
Inside, the YD model is now available with a 16GB variant of the NVIDIA RTX 3080 graphics, while the original 8GB variant remains. Both the XD and the YD models now have their Thunderbolt port upgraded to Thunderbolt 4 and their Bluetooth upgraded to v5.2. There is also support for PCI Express Gen4 SSD.
Besides these changes, the new AERO 17 HDR keeps the gorgeous 4K IPS display with VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification and 100% Adobe RGB coverage as well as the 99Wh battery.
Alongside the AERO 17 HDR, Gigabyte also refreshed other models in its premium laptop lineup with Tiger Lake processors in May 2021.

Reviewer score 82% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from laptopmag have found:
The Aero 17 HDR scored solidly during our independent heat test, which consists of running a fullscreen HD video for 15 minutes. The touchpad measured 78 degrees Fahrenheit, while the space between the G and H keys measured 88 degrees. The laptop outlasted the 4:29 premium gaming laptop average and best the Eon 17-X.
Pros
  • Color-accurate 4K video
  • Excellent audio quality
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • Lackluster graphics performance
  • No Thunderbolt 3

notebookcheck[2]

Reviewer score 76% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from notebookcheck have found:
In everyday operation, the laptop runs very smoothly without showing any micro stutters or similar delays. In the test with LatencyMon, the Aero 17 HDR YD shows increased latencies, and it is therefore not suited for applications with real-time processing. In our test configuration, Gigabyte uses a 512 GB SSD from Samsung that achieves very good read and write rates in the storage benchmark.
Pros
  • High-quality case
  • Good system performance
  • Good battery life
  • Good input devices
Cons
  • High temperatures under load
