Product Overview

Sonos Roam is a portable wireless speaker that combines Sonos smart speaker functions with a lightweight, durable design. Unlike many pure Bluetooth speakers, the Roam supports both WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0.
The Sonos Roam is able to switch automatically between WiFi and Bluetooth. It offers 10 hours of play time on a single charge with its built-in 18Wh battery and can be charged both wired via USB-C and wirelessly via Qi-compatible wireless chargers. The Roam's robustness is certified by its IP67 rating.
Naturally, the Roam can pair with other Sonos speakers via WiFi to form a multi-speaker audio system.
Another portable wireless smart speaker marketed by Sonos is the Move.

External Reviews

digitaltrends[1]

Reviewer score 88% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitaltrends have found:
The Sonos Roam is a wireless speaker that doubles as an assistant-agnostic smart speaker. Sonos has packed so many features into the Roam, it's easily the best value in a portable speaker. The $150 Marshall Emberton is just as good and has a 20-hour battery life.
Pros
  • IP67 water and dust protection
  • Excellent sound quality
  • Easy to set up
Cons
  • Doesn’t work with other Sonos products

gizmodo[2]

Reviewer score 69% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from gizmodo have found:
The Sonos Roam is rated for 10 hours of continuous playback and can last up to 10 days in sleep mode. You long-press the play/pause button, and if you have multiple Sonos speakers, you can transfer sound from the Roam to another Sonos speaker. While the sound swap feature is neat, it's not always intuitive.
Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Works with Alexa and Google Assistant
  • Long-press play/pause button
Cons
  • Doesn’t work with AirPlay 2

pcmag[3]

Reviewer score 61% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The Sonos Roam works as a smart speaker, so you can use Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant to control it by voice. There's no speakerphone functionality, which is the case with most of the smart speakers we've tested. On tracks with intense sub-bass content, the Roam delivers a decent sense of low-frequency response.
Pros
  • Sleek, portable design
  • Easy to set up and use
  • Built-in Alexa and Google Assistant
Cons
  • Lacks bass depth
  • No speakerphone functionality

rtings[4]

Reviewer score 58% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from rtings have found:
The Sonos Roam comes with a Trueplay room correction feature that automatically optimizes audio reproduction based on the unique acoustic characteristics of the room you're listening in. It's both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi compatible, so you can wirelessly stream podcasts from your mobile device to the bar. This speaker has Alexa and Google Assistant built-in, and has no trouble understanding your commands when you're far from the speaker.
Pros
  • Bass and treble adjustments
  • Supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Compression artifacts at max volume
Cons
  • Doesn't get very loud
  • Lacks low-bass

t3[5]

Reviewer score 78% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from t3 have found:
The Sonos Roam is a 6.5-inch portable speaker from Sonos. It has two drivers at each end, and claims a 10-day battery life. The sound is great outdoors, but not so great indoors. The battery life is a big meagre compared to some of the similarly priced competition, though its playing time fairly well matched up to the promised 10 hours.
Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Great sound quality
  • Great battery life
Cons
  • Not portable at all

techadvisor[6]

Reviewer score 79% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techadvisor have found:
The Sonos Roam is much smaller than the Move and has a battery half the capacity (18Wh) Despite being so much smaller, Sonos has still managed to offer up to 10 hours of battery life from the Roam. For the first time on a Sonos speaker, there's wireless charging. You can use it with any Qi-certified device or get the official Roam Wireless Charger which is IP54 and snaps on with magnets.
Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Easy to use
  • Great sound quality
Cons
  • No multi-room setup
  • No wireless charging

techhive[7]

Reviewer score 85% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techhive have found:
Thanks to the Sonos wireless platform, you can group the Roam with other Sonos speakers on your home network. The sleek, intuitive Sonos app makes the whole speaker-grouping process easy. The Roam's new Sound Swap feature lets you “swap” music with the nearest Sonos speaker in your home.
Pros
  • Easy to set up and use
  • Works with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit
  • Supports 24-bit audio streaming
Cons
  • Doesn’t work with Chromecast or AirPlay 2
  • No Wi-Fi support

techradar[8]

Reviewer score 69% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techradar have found:
The Sonos Roam works with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5, so you can use it in the home or on the move. You can use your voice assistant of choice to control the speaker hands-free, control your other smart home devices, check your calendar, ask questions, and more. The claimed battery life of the Roam is 10 hours, which we found to be about right in our tests.
Pros
  • Works with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5
  • Automatic Switching feature
Cons
  • Can’t pair with two Sonos Roams

theverge[9]

Reviewer score 68% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from theverge have found:
The Sonos Roam can fill any nook or cranny of your living room with music. It can be used in Bluetooth mode without agreeing to anything in software. But the Sonos app is essential, and in using that, you're agreeing to the company's privacy policy. The estimated battery life of 10 hours is also on the low side.
Pros
  • Compact and portable
  • Easy to use
  • Works with AirPlay 2
Cons
  • Poor Wi-Fi performance
  • Battery drain bug

tomsguide[10]

Reviewer score 74% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from tomsguide have found:
The Sonos Roam is the best-sounding ultraportable speaker yet. Its sound is richer than that of the Amazon Echo (4th Gen) and Google Nest Audio. The Roam's smarts only work when it's connected to your home Wi-Fi network.
Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Easy to use
  • Auto TruePlay
Cons
  • Lack of smart features
  • Battery life could be better

trustedreviews[11]

Reviewer score 76% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from trustedreviews have found:
The Sonos Roam is Sonos’ entry into the portable speaker market. It has a similar character to the other two Sonos speakers (Move and One SL) It isn’t as big-sounding or as bassy as the Move, while the One SL sounds ‘fuller’ in its presentation. What’s most impressive is its mid-range clarity and natural sense of performance.
Pros
  • Impressive clarity and detail
  • Comfortable to use
  • Easy to set up and use
Cons
  • Sound quality could be better

whathifi[12]

Reviewer score 69% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from whathifi have found:
The Sonos Roam is small and weighty enough to feel robust without weighing you down while on the move. It is IP67 rated, meaning complete water and dust resistance – it can be immersed in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. There are controls for play/pause, volume and microphone function on one of the Roam's rubbered ends, but otherwise everything is controlled via the Sonos app.
Pros
  • Impressive bass and treble
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Lack of detail and clarity

wired[13]

Reviewer score 89% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from wired have found:
The Sonos Roam is a small, cylindrical rounded triangle that's about the size of a 16-ounce beer can. It has a single power button and a USB-C port for charging on the back. A full charge will get you about 10 hours of listening time before it needs to plug back in.
Pros
  • Easy to set up and use
  • Easy to use app
  • Supports AirPlay 2
Cons
  • Not the best-sounding Bluetooth speaker
