Product Overview

The Xperia 5 III is a premium smartphone powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 5G chipset. Sharing much of the same features with the Xperia 1 III, the Xperia 5 III is more compact but suffers from few compromises.
Like the Xperia 1 III, it is a refinement of its predecessor, sharing with it the same design and camera setup:
On the display front, the Xperia 5 III finally embraces 120Hz refresh rate. The same 6.1-inch diagonal and FHD+ HDR OLED format are retained.
On the camera front, Sony upgrades the telephoto lens with optical zoom. As it has been the case with the Xperia 1 III, the main cameras in the Xperia 5 III are able to shoot at 20fps continuously with autofocus and auto exposure, including real-time tracking and real-time Eye AF. The smartphone is also capable of recording 4K videos at 120fps and FHD at 240fps. Naturally, the lenses wear the Zeiss brand and feature ZEISS T* coating for flare resistance.
On the audio front, audiophiles will be delighted to find the 3.5mm headphone jack still lives on.
In essence, the Xperia 5 III is the small Xperia 1 III with a smaller, lower-resolution display and without the depth camera. It comes with a smaller 8GB memory but is otherwise identical to its bigger brother.

gsmarena[2]

Reviewer score 61% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from gsmarena have found:
The Xperia 5 III is a rather peculiar offering that requires some careful framing for us to pinpoint its correct competitors. Samsung's smallest from the top shelf, the Galaxy S21 5G can be had for a lot less than the $1000/€1000/£900 that Sony is asking. The Xperia, meanwhile, has more zoom on its rear cameras and longer battery life, plus old-school goodies like a headphone jack and a memory card slot.
Pros
  • More zoom than the Xperia 1 III
  • Better battery life than the 5 III
  • Fingerprint sensor
Cons
  • No wireless charging
  • No headphone jack or microSD slot

nextpit[3]

Reviewers from nextpit have found:
The Sony Xperia 5 III's wide-angle main lens is based on a Sony IMX 557 sensor with a size of 1/1.7 inches. The zoom on two different focal lengths proved to be quite effective and versatile. I wish Sony would have included a larger main lens with a larger sensor to achieve a better level of detail.
Pros
  • Very good battery life
  • Excellent camera module
  • Fast charging
Cons
  • Mediocre camera performance
  • No wireless charging
  • No IP rating

Reviewers from notebookcheck have found:
The Xperia 5 III offers a 6.1-nch CinemaWide FHD+ OLED display with a 120-Hz refresh rate and HDR certification. The high-end Snapdragon 888 chip set used is based on the Kryo 680 CPU unit. Despite a relatively high consumption in idle mode, the Sony smartphone delivers a solid battery life.
Pros
  • Bright 120-Hz OLED panel
  • Good battery life
  • Fast Wi-Fi
Cons
  • Very warm case
  • Mediocre camera performance

techradar[5]

Reviewer score 78% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techradar have found:
The Sony Xperia 5 III runs on the same Snapdragon 888 chipset that powers the Sony Xperia 1 III. There isn't another stock camera app that places more high-grade photographic variables at your fingertips. The 8MP front camera isn't the best we've seen, tending to smooth out skin and overexpose highlights.
Pros
  • Superb performance
  • Good battery life
  • Good cameras
Cons
  • No wireless charging
  • No microSD card slot

trustedreviews[6]

Reviewer score 80% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from trustedreviews have found:
The Xperia 5 III is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G chip seen in most of 2021’s Android flagships. Paired with 8GB RAM this makes it a powerhouse device. The device blitzed through basic picture editing in Photoshop Express, opened applications in milliseconds and ran demanding games, like PUBG with its graphics maxed with zero issue. The only minor problem is that the device's back did on occasion get noticeably hot to the touch.
Pros
  • Beautiful 120Hz display
  • Good battery life
  • Decent cameras
Cons
  • Mediocre cameras
  • No wireless charging
