Product Overview

OnePlus 9 is the brand's early-2021 primary model. Like most flagship smartphones this year, it is powered by a Snapdragon 888 chipset. Compared to last year's OnePlus 8T, the OnePlus 9 comes with camera upgrades with some tradeoffs.
With the Snapdragon 888, the OnePlus 9 now uses LPDDR5 memory, though it is limited to 8GB. The device's Bluetooth module is now upgraded to v5.2, though the secondary SIM card slot is missing.
On the display front, the OnePlus 9 uses the same 6.55-inch OLED panel from the 8T. The same 120Hz refresh rate and DCI-P3 color coverage are carried over.
In terms of cameras, the OnePlus 9 retains the same front unit from last year. In the back, OnePlus upgraded the 48MP main camera with Sony's new IMX689 sensor. The ultra-wide module is also bumped to 50MP with Sony's IMX766 sensor. The tradeoff is the drop of the macro lens.
Performance-wise, OnePlus has endowed the 9 with a 4500mAh battery, 65W Warp Charge, and 15W wireless charging support.
The OnePlus 9 Pro with a stronger set of features is introduced at the same time.

gsmarena[1]

Reviewer score 74% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from gsmarena have found:
The OnePlus 9 scores an easy victory over the mediocre OnePlus 8T. The main camera captures better colors, dynamic range, and detail across the board. Low Light camera performance is also vastly improved as is video performance, especially when shooting with the ultra-wide. Overall, the OnePlus 9 gets a solid B+ for its efforts.
Pros
  • Great design and build quality
  • Excellent performance
  • Excellent software and game library
  • Great battery life
Cons
  • No wireless charging
  • Plastic frame
  • No IP rating

Reviewer score 88% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from laptopmag have found:
The OnePlus 9 is a compelling option for Android users looking for a sub-$1,000 phone that doesn't sacrifice too many features available in pricier flagships. OxygenOS 11 is the next best thing to stock Android 11. With the OnePlus 9, you'll get two major Android updates and three years of security patches. It's also worth spotlighting fast charging feature, which gets you from dead to 100% in about 30 minutes.
Pros
  • Excellent performance
  • Excellent battery life
  • Strong performance
Cons
  • No FHD display
  • No telephoto lens
  • No wireless charging

nextpit[3]

Reviewer score 79% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from nextpit have found:
The camera module fares better than the OnePlus 8 and 8T, but it still lags behind the Galaxy S21. On a day-to-day basis, the OnePlus 9 lasted 13 hours before falling below the 20% remaining battery life mark. The 4,500mAh dual-cell battery offers Warp Charge 65T wired fast charging but not the new Warp Charge wireless charging at 50 watts.
Pros
  • Dual-cell battery and Warp Charge 65T wireless charging
  • Good camera performance
  • Decent battery life
Cons
  • No telephoto lens
  • No IP certification

notebookcheck[4]

Reviewer score 73% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from notebookcheck have found:
The OnePlus 9 runs very smoothly and almost without lags in everyday use. The system performance is first-rate, and the application loading times are very fast. The 4,500 mAh dual-cell battery can be fully recharged in a good 30 minutes with the included 60-watt Warp Charge power adapter. The European version available in Germany also supports Qi wireless charging at up to 15 watts.
Pros
  • Great OLED display
  • Fast Wi-Fi
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • Mediocre cameras
  • No IP rating

pcmag[5]

Reviewer score 90% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
T-Mobile's mmWave in New York doesn't have a lot of heft to it, unlike Verizon's. In tests in an area with mmWave, the two mmWave-supporting phones did better, but not by much. The primary lens comes in at 48MP with an f/1.8 aperture. On the front, a 16MP shooter peeks from behind the hole-punch display.
Pros
  • Beautiful design
  • Excellent performance
  • Beautiful display
Cons
  • No optical zoom
  • No headphone jack

techadvisor[6]

Reviewer score 73% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techadvisor have found:
There's a lot to like about the OnePlus 9 with its stunning 120Hz AMOLED display and powerful components for starters. It also has wireless charging and when using wired, Warp Charge 65T can almost hit 100% in less than 30-minutes. You can pre-order it now from OnePlus with it going on sale 31 March. You'll now need to splash out £629/US$729 for the cheaper model and £729 (not available in the US) if you want the higher memory and storage configuration.
Pros
  • Fantastic 120Hz AMOLED display
  • Fast wireless charging
Cons
  • No headphone jack
  • No IP53 rating

techradar[7]

Reviewer score 91% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techradar have found:
The OnePlus 9 has a 48MP main and 50MP ultra-wide camera. The latter has a specialty macro mode that captures up-close photos that are easily better than those shot on other phones with designated macro lenses. There's also a 16MP front-facing camera that shoots admirable photos, with good color and sharp detail. The phone's Pro Mode has been customized to resemble the screen on Hasselblad cameras (even up to the yellow shutter button), and a shutter sound has been added.
Pros
  • Fantastic performance
  • Excellent cameras
  • Fast charging
Cons
  • No microSD card slot
  • No expandable storage

theverge[8]

Reviewer score 74% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from theverge have found:
The OnePlus 9 checks all the boxes required of a 2021 flagship phone. You'll get top-of-the-line performance for about $100 less than the other base model flagships. Fast charging is neat, with lots of appeal to heavy phone users. But if you want top-notch camera capabilities, or if fast charging feels more like a nice-to-have than a must, then you might want to look elsewhere.
Pros
  • High-refresh screen
  • Top-notch performance
  • Fast charging
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • No telephoto camera
  • No 5G support

tomsguide[9]

Reviewer score 85% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from tomsguide have found:
On T-Mobile's 5G network not far from my Bay Area house, the OnePlus 9 hit a download speed of 34.4 Mbps. The phone supports WarpCharge 65T technology, which allows the device to charge at a higher wattage for a longer period. You can expect two major Android updates plus three years of security patches from OnePlus.
Pros
  • Fast-refreshing display
  • Fast charging speeds
  • Long battery life
Cons
  • Camera could be better
  • No wireless charging

trustedreviews[10]

Reviewer score 82% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from trustedreviews have found:
The camera offers wonderfully fast shutter and autofocus speeds. The ultra-wide takes excellent landscape shots, too, offering rich detail and wonderfully wide views of the London skyline. Low-light performance here is also a step up on OnePlus previous efforts, but it still isn’t best in class. The lack of OIS (optical image stabilisation) means that noise does creep in if you don't hold the phone super-steady.
Pros
  • Fantastic 120Hz display
  • Excellent battery life
  • Excellent cameras
Cons
  • Average low-light performance
  • No optical image stabilisation

whathifi[11]

Reviewer score 78% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from whathifi have found:
The screen is bright and engaging with a decent degree of punch. The audio performance of the OnePlus 9 is firmly in the average category. It plays your favourite tracks faithfully enough but is never going to thrill you. But with busier tracks, there's more of a sense of what could have been.
Pros
  • Bright and engaging screen
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • Underwhelming audio performance
  • No dedicated music player
