Product Overview
ASUS ROG Phone 5 is a powerful smartphone based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 5G Mobile Platform. It features up to 16GB LPDDR5 memory, 6.78-inch OLED display with over 111% DCI-P3 coverage and 144Hz refresh rate, and the latest WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and 5G wireless connectivity.
True to its gaming heritage, the ROG Phone 5 inherits the design language of its predecessors. It also bucks the trend in the industry and retains the 3.5mm headphone jack, which is powered by a Hi-Fi-grade ESS DAC. The same 6000mAh battery capacity from previous generations can be found here, too.
Compared to its predecessor, the new ROG Phone 5 offers 25% faster CPU performance and 35% GPU performance.
With the ROG Phone 5, ASUS also introduced the AeroActive Cooler 5, which is a clip-on external cooling fan. At the same time, ASUS also introduced the more powerful ROG Phone 5 Ultimate.

digitaltrends[1]
Reviewer score 89% (normalized by Neofiliac)The ROG Phone 5 is the world's first smartphone to come with 18GB of RAM. This is a phone built for a purpose: to play the latest games without breaking a sweat. There's almost everything you could want from a flagship phone in 2021, and when you consider the basic version should come in under $1,000, it's decent value.
Pros
- Gorgeous screen
- Powerful processor
- Superb cameras
Cons
- No MicroSD card slot
- No microSD slot
laptopmag[2]
Reviewer score 80% (normalized by Neofiliac)The Asus ROG Phone 5 has a triple camera array on the back. The primary camera is the Sony IMX686, which is a 64MP wide-angle. The secondary is a 13MP f/2.4 ultrawide and finally, in classic mid-range fashion, there is a 5MP f-2.0 macro. Asus also added a number of software tools to protect the battery, including a bypass mode.
Pros
- Fantastic performance
- Excellent battery life
- Excellent cameras
Cons
- Slow Android update schedule
nextpit[3]
Reviewer score 78% (normalized by Neofiliac)The Asus ROG Phone 5 has a 64 MP main shooter, a 13 MP ultra-wide angle sensor, and a 5 MP macro sensor. The zoom performance is disappointing, even for digital zoom, as it settles for a poor 8x maximum magnification. The 6,000 mAh capacity perfectly handles all energy expenditure of this handset.
Pros
- Excellent performance
- Fast charging
- Good battery life
Cons
- Mediocre camera performance
- No wireless charging
notebookcheck[4]
Reviewer score 69% (normalized by Neofiliac)Unlike the RedMagic smartphones, the Asus ROG Phone 5 doesn't have an integrated fan. It relies on a dockable solution instead in the form of the AeroCooler 5. The small fan can rotate quite fast at up to 5,220 RPM, but it's also quite audible. The dual speakers flank the display and offer good sound thanks to GameFX.
Pros
- Bright 144 Hz display
- Long battery life
- Fast SoC
- Fast charging
Cons
- No wireless charging
- No 3.5mm headphone jack
phonearena[5]
Reviewer score 87% (normalized by Neofiliac)The Asus ROG Phone 5 will sport a large 6.6-inch OLED display with a screen refresh rate that can go up to 144Hz. At a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels, the phone's display matches its predecessor, and similarly, it's expected to produce beautiful colors and solid, deep black. The always-on display feature, called "Always-on Panel" in ZenUI, will be returning too. The phone is expected to run Android 11 at launch, with Asus ZenUI on top.
Pros
- Gorgeous OLED display
- Great speakers
- Great battery life
Cons
- No headphone jack
techadvisor[6]
Reviewer score 86% (normalized by Neofiliac)The Asus ROG Phone 5 undoubtedly offers one of the best mobile gaming experiences around, complete with built-in triggers. It has a gorgeous 144Hz AMOLED display with impressive touch response times, impressive audio chops and incredible power under the hood in the form of the Snapdragon 888. There are plenty of accessories available, from the Switch-like Kunai 5 controllers to the AeroActive Cooler 5 to keep your phone cool during extended gameplay sessions. The software is top-notch too, offering granular per-game performance tweaks alongside system-wide performance modes. While the large display means it's great for gaming, some tall-handed, plus it's heavier than most flagships in use.
Pros
- Gorgeous 144Hz AMOLED display
- Powerful Snapdragon 888 and up to 16GB of RAM
- Impressive battery life
Cons
- No 4G or 5G
techradar[7]
Reviewer score 86% (normalized by Neofiliac)The Asus ROG 5 runs Android 11 out of the box, with the usual – but still appreciably minimal – Zen UI overlay that's attractive and simple. The standard version starts at 8GB of RAM but you can get it in 12GB and 16GB configurations, all in the latest LPDDR5/UFS 3.1. There is no expandable storage via microSD. The phone is 5G-capable, but only sub-6 frequencies – there's no mmWave connectivity.
Pros
- Gorgeous display
- Top-tier specs
- Decent battery life
Cons
- No microSD card slot
- No wireless charging
tomsguide[8]
Reviewer score 88% (normalized by Neofiliac)In real-world use, the ROG Phone 5 is a battery-life champ. Outside of gaming, I was able to get more than two days of use before having to charge again. Its gargantuan battery lasts an incredibly long time, the custom AMED display is gorgeous, and the raw power makes everything playable.
Pros
- Gorgeous AMOLED display
- Long battery life
- Good performance
Cons
- Mediocre cameras
- No wireless charging
trustedreviews[9]
Reviewer score 82% (normalized by Neofiliac)ROG Phone 5 has a disappointing camera setup if you’re familiar with the ROG Phone 3. It’s spearheaded by a 64-megapixel IMX686 sensor with no image stabilisation. The ultrawide camera is weaker than the primary camera and misses out on nice-to-haves such as autofocus. Despite these gripes, I can’t help but think about the Black Shark 3, Legion Phone Duel and Nubia Red Magic 3. The ROG phone is better than all three in every respect as a camera phone – and as a phone in general.
Pros
- Superb gaming performance
- Gorgeous display
- Great battery life
Cons
- Mediocre low-light performance
- Poor macro camera
wired[10]
Reviewer score 78% (normalized by Neofiliac)Even after an hour of play, the ROG Phone 5 didn't feel uncomfortably hot. The screen's 144-Hz refresh rate is overkill, but in games that support 60-Hz or more, everything looks buttery smooth. The 64-megapixel main camera isn't going to dethrone the likes of the S21 Ultra or Google's Pixel 5.
Pros
- Sleek design
- Good battery life
- Long-term battery care features
Cons
- Mediocre cameras
- No microSD card slot
