OnePlus 8

Product Overview
OnePlus 8 is a premium smartphone powered by Snapdragon 865 chipset. It features a punch-hole FHD+ OLED display with a three-camera setup that is arguably a step-down from the 7T.
Compared to the 7T, the OnePlus 8 ditches the notch design, leaning on what Samsung has started to popularize with the Galaxy S20. The same 90Hz refresh rate is supported.
Nonetheless, the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset with X55 Dual Mode 5G modem bumps the performance of the OnePlus 8. WiFi 6 is also supported by a OnePlus device for the first time.
Alongside the OnePlus 8, OnePlus also introduced the 8 Pro. The latter offers superior camera and display, LPDDR5 memory, and a large battery.

cnet[1]
Reviewer score 90% (normalized by Neofiliac)The OnePlus 8 has a 48-megapixel camera and wide-angle camera that take excellent photos. The camera also has OIS and shoots 4K video that's sharp and steady. Instead of sharing a telephoto camera or a color filter camera with the 8 Pro, the phone has a macro camera. For the most part, both phones performed similarly on benchmark tests.
Pros
- Gorgeous, colorful display
- Excellent battery life
- Fast charging
Cons
- No telephoto camera or macro camera
- No IP rating
digitaltrends[2]
Reviewer score 70% (normalized by Neofiliac)The OnePlus 8 is a good smartphone. It has an attractive screen, a decent camera, great software, and long battery life. Still, it lacks any feature that makes it stand out. The increase of $100 over the OnePlus 7T may not sound like much, but 5G's limited appeal isn't really enough to justify the extra.
Pros
- Attractive design
- Good performance
- Good software
- Long battery life
Cons
- No 5G
- No IP68 rating
nextpit[3]
Reviewer score 93% (normalized by Neofiliac)The 6.78-inch Fluid AMOLED panel in a 19.8:9 format has a resolution of 3,168 x 1,440 pixels (QHD+). This results in a pixel density of 513 ppi. On the back, there is a change in design due to the new camera module. The main camera is still in the middle, but the flash, laser autofocus, and the 3x telephoto camera have moved to the left.
Pros
- Fast performance
- Good battery life
- Good cameras
Cons
- No wireless charging
- No IP68 certification
notebookcheck[4]
Reviewer score 73% (normalized by Neofiliac)The OnePlus 8 integrates the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 and 12 GB of RAM for smooth system performance. The processor is complemented by the Qualcomm Adreno 650 graphics unit and 256 of UFS 3.0 storage. The benchmark results of the Android smartphone match our expectations both in the graphics- and the system-intensive tests.
Pros
- High-quality case
- Good battery life
- Fast SoC
- Good system performance
Cons
- High internal temperatures
- No IP certification
pcmag[5]
Reviewer score 76% (normalized by Neofiliac)The OnePlus 8 has a 48-megapixel main camera, a 16- megapixel wide-angle camera, and a 2-degree macro camera. The lack of a real zoom lens isn't as bad an issue as you'd think. The Galaxy S20 line has even better low-light camera performance and millimeter-wave 5G on T-Mobile.
Pros
- Good low-light camera performance
- Good battery life
- 5G on T-Mobile
Cons
- No dedicated zoom camera
- No 5G
pcworld[6]
Reviewer score 62% (normalized by Neofiliac)The OnePlus 8 feels a touch slower than the OnePlus 8 Pro due to the refresh and the RAM, but it's nothing you're going to notice in a vacuum. The lack of wireless charging is definitely a sore spot, but you do get super-fast wired charging out of the box. Helping the speed and the battery is OnePlus' excellent Oxygen OS, which is extremely faithful to Google's Android.
Pros
- Super-fast 5G
- Excellent performance
- Good battery life
Cons
- Camera isn’t as good as the 7T
- No wireless charging
techadvisor[7]
Reviewer score 87% (normalized by Neofiliac)The OnePlus 8 has the same set of internal components as the Pro, so is powered by Qualcomm's latest flagship Snapdragon 865 processor. It's very impressive and the phone comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB as standard. A new feature is optimised charging, where the phone adjusts the charging pattern based on your usage to “reduce battery load and extend battery life” Both phones are available in the UK now from OnePlus, Amazon and John Lewis, with the latter offering free Bullets Wireless 2 while stocks last.
Pros
- Fantastic 90Hz display
- Good battery life
- Good cameras
Cons
- No microSD card slot
- No wireless charging
techradar[8]
Reviewer score 83% (normalized by Neofiliac)The OnePlus 8's 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens is far more useful. Its 116-degree field of view is great for outdoor shots, and even better for indoor ones. The 16MP front-facing shooter is functional and sharp, though it tends toward a warmish yellow/orange tint. The OnePlus 8 has a 4,300mAh battery, which is a bit bigger than the power packs in some comparable phones.
Pros
- Fantastic performance
- Fast charging
- Good battery life
Cons
- No wireless charging
- No telephoto camera
- No headphone jack
theverge[9]
Reviewer score 79% (normalized by Neofiliac)The OnePlus 8 has a triple-camera setup on the rear consisting of a main 48-megapixel f/1.75 camera. There's a low-resolution macro camera in the rear camera array, but I found it to be of limited use. The camera does a good job in well-lit conditions, and it held up well against both the OnePlus 8 Pro and a Pixel 3.
Pros
- Great performance
- Good battery life
- Good cameras
Cons
- No IP rating
- No wireless charging
tomsguide[10]
Reviewer score 87% (normalized by Neofiliac)The OnePlus 8 comes with a 4,300-mAh battery — bigger than the 3,800-mAh power pack in the OnePlus 7T. The best phone battery life for the devices we've tested tops 11 hours, so the OnePlus 8 finds itself in rare company. The highlight of the special features is the phone's in-display fingerprint sensor.
Pros
- Superlative display
- Excellent cameras
- Excellent battery life
Cons
- No wireless charging
- No fingerprint sensor
trustedreviews[11]
Reviewer score 70% (normalized by Neofiliac)The OnePlus 8 has a good mid-range camera, not an ultra-high-end one. The 2x zoom isn't great, but it is still useful for composition. Video quality is decent, but there isn’t quite the detail leap from 1080p to 4K you’d see from a higher-end sensor, including the OnePlus 8 Pro. The phone has a 4300mAh battery, and the usual super-fast charging.
Pros
- Super-fast charging
- Decent cameras
- Good battery life
Cons
- No 5G
- Mediocre low-light camera performance
