Product Overview

Huawei P40 Pro is part of Huawei's late-2020 flagship P-series smartphones. A main feature of the P40 Pro is Huawei's new Quad-curve Overflow Display that stretches the OLED panel around all four edges that is shared with the P40 Pro+.
Further, the P40 Pro features dual front cameras and four rear cameras that are a step-up from the Mate 30 Pro 5G, though the Kirin 990 5G SoC has been retained. Its a large 1/1.28" sensor enhances low-light performance, while the front-facing depth camera unlocks facial authentication.
An enhanced in-screen fingerprint reader in the P40 Pro offers 30% faster biometric authentication compared to the previous model. Last but not least, the P40 Pro also comes with WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, an improvement over the Mate 30 series.

HD OLED display. The 4,200mAh battery is also plenty for a full day of use and then some. Overall, the Huawei P40 Pro's hardware package is a steal as you can now grab it well below its original price-tag. The app experience remains second class when compared to Google's ecosystem, not to mention Apple's.

Pros
  • Top-notch camera
  • Excellent battery life
  • Solid performance
Cons
  • No microSD card slot
  • Lackluster performance

Reviewers from androidauthority have found the following***:
The P40 Pro was a cutting edge piece of hardware back when it launched. The package still holds up very well over six months later. With an IP68 rating, fast wireless charging, and a 90Hz display, the handset's hardware does everything you could possibly want. Despite its age and older-gen components, the Kirin 950 5G SoC continues to offer solid performance.

Pros
  • Beautiful 90Hz display
  • Excellent camera
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • GMS and Google apps are frustrating
  • No Android 11 support

digitaltrends[3]

Reviewers from digitaltrends have found the following***:
The Huawei P40 Pro has fabulous hardware and a dreamy camera, with a long-lasting battery to ensure you get the most from both. You are going to have to compromise on the software, which through no fault of Huawei's, does not come with the Google Play Store. It's available to buy in the United Kingdom now through Huawei's own site and Carphone Warehouse, but has not been officially released in the U.S.

Pros
  • Gorgeous display
  • Excellent cameras
  • Excellent battery life

  • No IP68 rating

OLED panel spans 6.58 inches diagonally (16.71 cm, 105.2 cm²) It offers a sharp picture despite its Full HD+ resolution. The fingerprint sensor below the display is easily accessible and quickly and reliably unlocks the smartphone. The Kirin 990 is one of the fastest SoCs on the market currently.

pcmag[6]

Reviewers from pcmag have found the following***:
The P40 Pro's camera does have some drawbacks, however. While the color balance is better than we've seen on other Huawei devices, we still prefer the richness and contrast from the Pixel 4 XL and even the Find X2 Pro. The company's most powerful phone (that does not fold) doesn't quite measure up to competitors when it comes to processing power and storage capacity.

Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Impressive performance
  • 10x digital zoom
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • No 5G support
  • No headphone jack

t3[7]

Reviewers from t3 have found the following***:
The Huawei P40 Pro is a phone enthusiast's dream phone in so many respects. The hardware, as is now expected from Huawei, is truly top tier. The camera system is the best I've seen all year, beating off even the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra's unit. There's 5G connectivity, a battery that runs and runs, a beautiful and large screen, an elegant design, a slick operating system and a raft of flagship-level extras. But that inability to access the Google Play store, as well as Google's services, in the end undermines the Huawei handset.

Pros
  • The best camera system on the market
  • Beautiful screen
  • Top-tier hardware
Cons
  • No Google Play store
  • No 5G support

The Huawei P40 Pro has a Kirin 990 5G chipset and 8GB of RAM. It's stacked to withstand demanding tasks, including gaming, and should last the average user at least two years before showing its age. The phone supports the company's own 40W wired SuperCharge tech, which has clearly been improved despite to change in wattage. Then there's the addition of support for 27W fast wireless charging and the option of reverse wireless charging too.

Pros
  • Superb performance
  • Superb battery life
  • Fast charging
Cons
  • No GMS
  • No headphone jack

techradar[9]

Reviewers from techradar have found the following***:
The Huawei P40 Pro is running Android 10, the latest version of Google's operating system, but without Google services. This is due to the restrictions the US government has placed on Huawei amid ongoing security concerns. It has some top-end apps – you can find a list of some key ones here – but a lot of heavy hitters are still missing.

Pros
  • Fantastic battery life
  • Decent cameras
Cons
  • No Google services
  • No waterproofing

The P40 Pro doesn't ship with Google apps. It doesn't even have a preloaded maps app. It does have Huawei's own App Gallery, which is a threadbare app store. I love this phone's hardware, but not enough to jump through its many software hoops.

Pros
  • Excellent cameras

Cons
  • No headphone jack
  • No Google Play Services

The P40 Pro has a 4,200 mAh battery, the same as the P30 Pro from last year. App Gallery — Huawei's stand-in for Google Play — is starting to pick up steam. The phone runs Huawei's EMUI 10.1 interface, which is built on the open source version of Android.

Pros
  • 90Hz AMOLED display
  • Good battery life
  • Fast charging
Cons
  • No Google apps
  • App Gallery isn’t for everyone

trustedreviews[12]

Sentiment Score 77%
Reviewers from trustedreviews have found the following***:
The Huawei P40 Pro runs Android 10, with the brand’s own interface, Emotion UI over the top. It isn’t on the same footing as other Android phones though, thanks to the US imposed Huawei Google ban. Huawei phones are restricted when it comes to Google; this means no Play Store, and other limitations when using third-party apps. With 5G data speeds, fast WiFi and NFC, not to mention a responsive under-display fingerprint scanner and fast face unlocking, nothing major is missing here.

Pros
  • Gorgeous screen
  • Great camera
  • Great battery life
Cons
  • No Google Services
  • Limited third-party apps
