Product Overview

Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM lens is a compact prime lens in Canon's RF-mount system. A budget-friendly option, the RF50mm F1.8 improves upon its EF counterpart with improved image quality as well as the addition of a customizable control ring shared among RF lenses.
To make these improvements, Canon has optimized lens placement and coatings that together deliver improved color balance, aberration control, and flare resistance.
The f/1.8 maximum aperture makes this "pancake" lens an interesting offering for low-light and portrait photography.

External Reviews

cameralabs[1]

Reviewer score 75% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from cameralabs have found:
The Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM is a low-cost standard lens for the EOS R mirrorless system. It provides an affordable entry into the World of prime lenses, low-light photography and shallow depth-of-field effects. It is by far the cheapest native lens in the RF system to date, making it tempting for anyone looking for a second lens to complement an existing kit-zoom. But while the overall style and rendering is similar, the newer RF version is noticeably sharper across more of the frame when wide-open.
Pros
  • Excellent sharpness at f1.8
  • Compact and compact
  • Optical stabilisation
Cons
  • Not as sharp as EF

digitalpicture[2]

Reviewer score 73% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitalpicture have found:
The Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM Lens is half as expensive as the next-lowest-priced Canon RF lens. The lens is compatible with all Canon EOS R series cameras. Canon USA provides a 1-year limited warranty on the lens.
Pros
  • Low price
  • Compact design
  • Good image quality
Cons
• Lack of focal length sharing options

pcmag[3]

Reviewer score 76% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
The Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM makes some sacrifices to meet its aggressive pricing. Its autofocus isn't the quickest or quietest, but it's better than similar budget entries. It's a very appealing lens for beginners, with a wide aperture for portraiture and low-light imaging.
Pros
  • Wide aperture for portraiture and low-light imaging
  • Lightweight build quality
Cons
  • Bokeh can be distracting
