Product Overview

Apple iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are the company's latest flagship smartphones. Covered in Ceramic Shield front, they stand out from the standard iPhone 12 with a stainless steel chassis, an additional telephoto camera and a LiDAR Scanner.
Featuring the same design as the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, the Pro and Pro Max are encased in stainless steel with the new Ceramic Shield front cover. These 5G- and WiFi 6-enabled devices are powered by Apple's latest A14 Bionic chip built on a 5nm process. The chip's performance gains include up to a 50% edge over the fastest competition. The 16-core Neural Engine further offers 80% increase in performance, pushing 11 trillion operations per second.
The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max also introduce a new LiDAR Scanner for immersive augmented reality (AR) experiences and MagSafe, which offers high-powered wireless charging and an all-new ecosystem of accessories that easily attach to iPhone.
The LiDAR delivers faster, more realistic AR experiences and improves autofocus by 6x in low-light scenes for more accuracy and reduced capture time in photos and videos. Combined with the power of the A14 Bionic's Neural Engine, the new LiDAR also unlocks Night mode portraits, rendering a beautiful low-light bokeh effect.

Reviewers from androidauthority have found the following***:
If you already have an iPhone 11 series device, I don't suggest buying an iPhone 12 Pro. The iPhone 12 Mini is also a fantastic option, sporting the same specs as the iPhone 12, but in a much smaller form factor. If you're someone who would rather spend that money on accessories, the standard iPhone 12 will likely be fine for you.

Pros
  • Slim, premium design
  • Great battery life
  • Long-lasting battery
Cons
  • No 120Hz refresh rate
  • No headphone jack
  • No wireless charging

Reviewers from digitaltrends have found the following***:
The iPhone 12 Pro Max is defined by three things: Its huge size, its long battery life, and its more capable camera. Only those who want a large phone, with its big screen and extra space to work and play, should buy one. Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is the obvious pick, with a huge display and excellent set of features.

Pros
  • Incredible display
  • Excellent battery life
  • Excellent cameras
Cons
  • Too big for one hand
  • No IP68 water resistance

Dolby Vision is an amazing tech demo, but one that has many caveats. Thankfully, SDR video is still great. Battery life is good, the screen is fantastic, and the A14 Bionic paired with ample memory and 128GB of base storage is giving you years of runway to keep this phone for a long time.

Pros
  • Gorgeous OLED display
  • Excellent battery life
  • Excellent performance
Cons
  • No 5G

The iPhone 12 Pro's TrueDepth camera also impresses with 12 megapixels and comes with ƒ/2.2 aperture and HDR 3. Bokeh mode has been made available again. Deep Fusion and the night mode at the front delivers some really good results with an additional or two seconds of exposure. The Selfie camera shows off its full potential only in daylight.

Overall brightness distribution as fairly even and balanced, and colors were pretty accurate. Keep in mind that you may want to disable TrueTone should you require utmost display color accuracy as Apple’s ambient light-based color adjustment feature can distort colors quite a bit. The iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with a set of stereo speakers: A dedicated speaker at the bottom and the earphone itself.

Pros
  • High-quality OLED display
  • Excellent battery life
  • Fast charging
Cons
  • Display could be brighter
  • No wireless charging

Reviewers from notebookcheck have found the following***:
The iPhone 12 Pro features two speakers for media consumption, the earphone itself and one extra speaker at the bottom. The speakers can get very loud and showed a fairly balanced soundscape on medium volume. However, mids were rather thin, resulting in lack of depth and prowess of the iPhone's competitors. You can connect Bluetooth headphones for an improved audio experience.

  • High-quality OLED display
  • Fast SoC
  • Excellent battery life
Cons

The 12 Pro adds a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with 2x zoom lens. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has an even more intense true 5x optical zoom. The 12 Pro's true photo chops shine in Night Mode, where the LiDAR scanner speeds up autofocus and enables Night Portrait Mode.

On paper, the Pro Max's camera has some advantages over all the other iPhone 12 cameras. The Pro and Pro Max support bokeh Portrait mode at night; the mini and 12 do not. The iPhone Pro line has some super-high-level camera features that the lower-cost iPhones don't.

Pros
  • Super-long battery life
  • Large, bright screen
  • Long-lasting battery
Cons
  • No headphone jack

The iPhone 12 Pro is a serious step up from the iPhone 11 Pro, but that's not who this flagship is really for. It's for those who own older iPhones who are looking to upgrade, such as the iPhone XS, iPhone X or iPhone 8. The iPhone 12 faces stiff competition from the Samsung Galaxy S21, with a dynamic 6.2-inch AMOLED display.

The iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max add a LiDAR scanner that improves low-light autofocus and allows bokeh portraits to be taken in Night Mode. Apple claims it lasts for up to 20 hours of video playback, compared with 17 hours for the other models. The Pro Max has a larger screen, making for a much more cinematic experience, but the standard iPhone 12 delivers a more crisply defined image.

Cons

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is the best camera phone on the market. It's still a two-handed phone, but I like the larger 6.7-inch screen on this year's model. Apple has four new phones in its 2020 lineup, so if you're upgrading this year, you have a lot of options.

Cons

Reviewers from wired have found the following***:
The A14 Bionic processor is powerful, offering speedy access to apps and running them smoothly. It would've been nice to see a screen refresh rate faster than 60 Hz, especially since 90 or 120 Hz has become the norm on flagship Android phones. The battery life is solid, getting me through a full day of average to heavy use.

  • Super-fast 5G speeds
