External Reviews

androidauthority[1]

Reviewer score 64% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from androidauthority have found:
The Microsoft Surface Earbuds sound quite good and reproduce accurate audio across the frequency range. The open-type fit lets you hear both your music and the world around you, making auditory masking inevitable. Apple's hard earbud casing balances on your ear with little security. If you want to put your money to something with more features, better sound quality and a better mic system, there are plenty of competitively priced options.
Pros
  • Great sound quality
  • Comfortable fit
  • IPX4 rating
Cons
  • Sound quality isn’t great out of the box
  • No wireless charging

digitaltrends[2]

Reviewer score 69% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from digitaltrends have found:
The Surface Earbuds offer solid value and an experience that no other pair of buds can currently match. In terms of productivity, they're hard to beat. But when things like audio quality, battery life, or usability come into play, the floodgates open for what they offer.
Pros
  • Comfortable fit
  • Good sound quality
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • No active noise cancellation
  • No wireless charging

laptopmag[3]

Reviewer score 81% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from laptopmag have found:
Microsoft outfitted the Surface Earbuds with two 13.6-millimeter drivers. While the buds did a good job on the mids and the highs, it's hit or miss on the lows. With the charging case, you get 16 hours for a full 24 hours of total juice.
Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Comfortable fit
  • Great battery life
Cons
  • No active noise cancelling
  • Lack of customization features

pcmag[4]

Reviewer score 48% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from pcmag have found:
Each earbud houses a 13.6mm driver that delivers a frequency range of 20Hz-20kHz. On tracks with intense sub-bass content, the Surface Earbuds deliver a solid low-frequency presence. There's a decent sense of deep bass at times, but at top volumes, the drivers can distort.
Pros
  • Excellent sound signature with solid bass depth
  • Waterproof and dust-resistant
  • Comfortable fit
Cons
  • Mediocre noise cancellation
  • No ear canal seal

rtings[5]

Reviewer score 32% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from rtings have found:
The Microsoft Surface Earbuds are disappointing truly wireless earbuds for mixed usage. Due to their open fit, they block almost no background noise, and their mic's recording quality is poor. While their mid-range is very even and well-balanced, they're very recessed in both their bass and treble ranges.
Pros
  • Decently stable fit
  • Great battery life
  • Good companion app
Cons
  • Mediocre microphone recording quality
  • Poor microphone performance
  • High PC latency

t3[6]

Reviewer score 85% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from t3 have found:
Microsoft's Surface Earbuds are among the very best in-ear headphones. They establish quite a large soundstage, one that's well defined. The bass is detailed and textured, and is solid enough for the rest of the frequency range to ride on. The midrange is equally accomplished, with lots of fine detail revealed about a singer's technique - as a consequence, voices are loaded with character.
Pros
  • Sleek, comfortable design
  • Excellent sound quality
  • Comfortable fit
Cons
  • No active noise cancellation
  • No aptX Low Latency

techradar[7]

Reviewer score 70% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from techradar have found:
Microsoft Surface Earbuds are very well-balanced and well-controlled. Soundstage is big enough to give every instrumental strand plenty of room in which to operate. Bluetooth 4.2 isn't the most cutting-edge, but here it's aptX-enabled. Pairing is swift, and proves secure and stable in every reasonable circumstance.
Pros
  • Well-balanced sound
  • Comfortable fit
  • Decent battery life
Cons
  • No aptX Low Latency
  • Underwhelming battery life

theverge[8]

Reviewer score 54% (normalized by Neofiliac)
Reviewers from theverge have found:
Microsoft splits track controls and volume between the two sides. You swipe forward on the left earbud to skip a song or back to return to the previous one. Microsoft's gesture for bringing up Siri or Google Assistant can sometimes clash with these controls. The charging case can only be updated when plugged into a Windows PC.
Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Good sound quality
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • No multipoint pairing
  • No multi-device pairing
