JBL estimates battery life to be roughly 12 hours, but your results will vary with volume levels, and use of the LEDs. On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," the speaker reproduces some convincing low-frequency depth. For the price, we like the audio output of the JBL Charge 4 and the Sony S-XB32.

However, it lacks low-bass, and its treble range is slightly underemphasized. While it has to downmix stereo content into mono, it has outstanding directivity, resulting in a wide and open soundstage.

The Pulse 4 retains the same balanced sound and 360-degree sound but ditches the microphone. The speaker's controls are located on the top ring and the buttons are big and easy to use. For $50 more, you can get the more powerful and feature packed Sony SRS-XB501G.

The light show can be personalised through the app, with colour schemes available from a wide pallet. At 20W of output it’s capable of doing a job even in larger rooms. The lack of a built-in microphone is the biggest disappointment.
