Product Overview

The 2nd-gen BMW 2 Series Coupe (G42) is the true descendent of the original 2 Series, keeping its Coupe body style and RWD drivetrain layout. It is confusingly marketed alongside the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe (F44), which is a FWD sedan with a transversely-mounted engine.
As has been the case with the original 2 Series Coupe (F22), the G42 can be considered the true spiritual successor to BMW coupes of the past. Its dimensions are close to that of the E90 3 Series, and it is distinctly driver-focused in BMW's current lineup.
At launch, the G42 is available with three powertrain options, including an inline-4 diesel, an inline-4 petrol, and an inline-6 petrol with all-wheel drive. Enthusiasts may be disappointed in the fact that the ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic is now the only transmission available.
On the other hand, they may revel in the exterior design of the G42, which does not feature the much-derided vertical kidney grilles found in the new 4 Series.
Inside, the G42 2 Series Coupe focuses on combining the latest technology with improved comfort. The new focus appears to be on touchscreen user interfaces, which now dominate the cabin.

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The M240i never feels over-powered, but you’re aware there’s a muscular unit under the bonnet at all times. The soundtrack is enhanced in the sportier settings, but it works well. Unlike most compact coupes - the Porsche 718 Cayman, Toyota Supra and Alpine A110 included - the 2 Series offers small back seats and a decent boot.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lacklustre handling
  • Weak steering

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The new 2 Series Coupe will be revealed in full this July and will go on sale in Britain towards the end of 2021. The car is larger in appearance, a good 100mm longer at least, with the wheelbase stretched by some 50mm too. The move to underpinnings shared with the larger 4 Series doesn't mean that the 2 Series has gone soft – far from it. Agility is the key attribute the engineers have prioritised.

Pros
  • Powerful six-cylinder engine
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of rear-wheel drive
