Product Overview

Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is an APS-C all-in-one zoom lens for the E-mount mirrorless system. It covers the 25.5-105 mm full-frame-equivalent zoom range at a constant, bright f/2.8 aperture. It is Tamron's first high-speed zoom lens for mirrorless APS-C cameras.
Tamron designed this lens to be versatile. Its compact and lightweight nature makes it easy to carry on a camera throughout the day. Leveraging its unique experience in designing all-in-one zoom lenses, Tamron has managed to deliver good image quality and close-focusing capability.
Additionally, the 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD features optical image stabilization (Vibration Compensation, VC) that makes handheld videography and night photography more manageable.
This lens shares with full-frame E-mount zoom lenses that Tamron has marketed, such as the 70-300mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III, 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III and the 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III, in terms of features and filter size.

The Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III A-VC RXD (900 euros) is a very good lens for all Sony APSC bodies and can produce high quality photos. It delivers very good to excellent sharpness, with a reliable AF, soft background blur, very good color rendering and optical stabilization that will be particularly useful in video. The Sony however is a clear winner for the bokeh balls aspect with much less onion rings.

Reviewers from pcmag have found the following***:
The Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is a welcome addition to the E-mount lens library. It betters the premium E 16-55mm F 2.8 G in zoom power, adds optical stabilization, and nets exceedingly sharp photos across its zoom range. It's an especially appealing lens for photographers who've grown out of Sony's E 18-5mm F3.5.

Pros
  • Sharp, sharp photos
  • Optical stabilization
  • Dust and splash protection
Cons
  • Lacks manual controls
