Product Overview

The ID.4 is Volkswagen's first fully-electric vehicle. A compact crossover, the ID.4 offers generous interior space, thanks to the improved packaging as a result of electrification. With a drag coefficient of 0.28, the ID.4 offers three power levels optimized for efficiency.
Further, the ID.4 offers a cargo capacity from 543 to 1575 liters. Inside, most physical buttons are replaced by two digital displays.
Unlike the ID.3, which targets the European market, the ID.4 is a global car.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
Volkswagen claims the ID 4's interior is as roomy as the larger Touareg's. It is certainly spacious up front, with ample head and shoulder room giving it a feeling of a much larger car. The rear seat is set unusually high due to the packaging of the battery, so although it offers a good amount of leg room, it is rather restricted on head room.

Pros
  • Impressive range
  • Decent handling
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of tactility

autocar[2]

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
VW has retuned the ID 4’s suspension for the GTX. Among the changes are unique spring and damper rates and a 15mm reduction in ride height. The standard wheels are 20in, but the early-production example we’re driving runs on an optional 21in set. Claimed energy consumption of 3.8kWh per mile provides the GTX with a competitive range of 298 miles from its 77kWh battery.

Pros
  • Powerful electric motors
  • Comfortable ride
  • Excellent handling
Cons
  • Not quite as agile as standard ID 4s

autoexpress[3]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The Volkswagen ID.4 is a good, but not class-leading, all-electric family car. There are seven trims available, with the original entry-level City version replaced with the Life model, and Business and Tech levels now discontinued. It goes up against the accomplished Ford Mustang Mach-E and supremely talented Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Pros
  • Comfortable ride
  • Good range
Cons
  • Not class-leading
  • Touch-sensitive controls can be frustrating to use

autoexpress[4]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
VW's all-electric ID sub-brand continues to grow at pace, with this new ID.4 SUV joining the line-up. It's the second ID model following the ID.3 hatchback, but this full SUV offers fresh appeal and even more style. Starting from £37,800 in 1st Edition trim (the only specification available so far) after the £3,000 UK plug-in car grant.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Good range
Cons
  • Not as fast as rivals
  • No regenerative braking

Volkswagen's world-famous GTI badge turned 45 this year. Now VW is embarking on a new era – an era for the electric generation. All future Volkswagen EVs will feature the ID. badge. The ID.4 GTX offers adequate (if not spellbinding) performance, as well as decent-enough body control. The cabin is roomy too, while quality takes a jump in the right direction thanks to new fabrics on the dashboard.

Pros
  • Gorgeous design
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Fiddly infotainment system
  • Not as agile as a Mach-E

carwow[6]

Reviewers from carwow have found the following***:
The Volkswagen ID4 looks a little like sci-fi films in the ‘80s predicted cars today would look like. It's similar in dimensions to the Volkswagen Tiguan but takes on a much more rounded design. The ID4 will be available with a 77kWh battery linked up to a 204hp electric motor, good for 310Nm of torque. This setup drives the rear wheels and can shift the ID4 from 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds. It'll do a claimed 310 miles between charges, and supports 125kW fast charging.

Pros
  • Fantastic range
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Only available in 1st Edition trim

cnet[7]

Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
Infotainment experience in the ID 4 is clean and simple, showing some serious iOS influence. Most of the car's controls rely on capacitive touch. That panoramic roof provides good headroom, front and rear. All that's included on even the base edition, called Pro, starts at $41,190.

Pros
  • Sleek, modern design
  • Excellent range
  • Excellent infotainment
Cons
  • No EPA-rated range

The VW ID.4 is a pleasant ride with reliable handling. The interface takes some getting used to with no physical controls available. Electrify America plans to double the number of EV fast charging stations in the US. The EPA claims a 250-mile range in combined driving; on our roadtrip we achieved about 190 miles.

Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Reliable handling

Cons

  • Unreliable customer service

Reviewers from tomsguide have found the following***:
The 1st Edition ID.4's low center of gravity gave it a slightly sporty feel. But only slightly. Body roll was kept in check by the heft of the battery pack under the passenger compartment. Volkswagen's IQ.Drive driver assistance features are standard and include adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent acceleration
Cons
  • Limited range
  • No one-pedal driving
