Product Overview

The 4th-generation Toyota Yaris is designed for urban driving as well as the open road, reflected in its compact proportions and class-leading, tight turning circle, while at the same time providing a spacious, comfortable and high-quality interior with equipment specifications.
The new Yaris is the first application of the Toyota New Global Architecture – TNGA – philosophy to a small car, introducing the modular GA-B platform that will underpin a series of new models. It uses the latest evolution of Toyota’s fourth-generation hybrid electric powertrain, giving the car better fuel economy, lower emissions and a greatly enhanced capability to operate on its electric power alone, at higher speeds and over longer distances.
The 4th-gen Toyota Yaris benefits from a greater range of Toyota Safety Sense active systems as standard, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), such as Lane Trace Assist, Emergency Steering Assist and Intersection Turn Assistance. The functionality of the Pre-Collision System has been increased so that it can detect pedestrians by day and night and cyclists in daytime driving.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
Three-cylinder engine sounds vocally meek-and-mild at first; a bit like an angry Daihatsu Charade with a loud-hailer. But once you’ve discovered how keenly it responds to throttle inputs, how indefatigably boosty it feels through the mid-range, and how freely it revs beyond 5000rpm. I’d swear it feels every bit as potent as early Subaru Impreza Turbos did, only without the laggy pause for intake of breath of the old Scoob.

Pros
  • Powerful turbocharged engine
  • Punchy mid-range
  • Impressive handling
Cons
  • Nothing in particular

Forged instead of cast 18in alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, Torsen limited-slip diffs front and rear, stiffer springs, dampers and roll bars. Circuit Pack, £3500 and equipped here, is rather more racy. has sat-nav, parking sensors, a blind-spot monitor, a head-up display and a JBL sound system.

Pros
  • Fun to drive
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Ridiculous rearview mirror
  • Not as powerful as some rivals

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
This is the most interesting Yaris cabin since the original. As with the new Corolla, perceived quality has taken a leap forward. There are useful ledges and storage cubbies alongside convincing textures. Back-row passenger space is better than good. But the A-pillars are too thick, while the unattractive touchscreen dominates your view ahead.

Pros
  • Fantastic looks
  • Decent infotainment
Cons
  • Cheap to drive
  • Not the most fun to drive

autoexpress[4]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The Yaris is a great performer around town, and certainly won’t be caught out on motorway stretches. The dimensions of this Yaris have actually shrunk compared to the previous model, with overall length slightly reduced and a lower roofline than before. There are four core trim-levels to choose from; the entry-level Icon is well-equipped, followed by Design, Dynamic and the top-spec Excel equipment lines. Standard equipment includes 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights and wipers, adaptive cruise control, air-con and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity.

Pros
  • Stylish looks
  • Good fuel economy
Cons
  • Lack of practicality
  • Dull cabin

autoexpress[5]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The all-new fourth generation of the car is being offered only as a hybrid. UK buyers are being offered four trim levels, if you discount the limited-run Launch Edition. We tried a very late prototype of the Mk4 Yaris in Portugal earlier this year and came away encouraged. A decent drive on a mixture of motorway, A-roads and urban crawl shows where the new Yaris's strength really lies.

Pros
  • Powerful hybrid powertrain
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Hybrid powertrain isn’t as efficient as Fiesta
  • Noisy on UK roads

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
This is the third-generation of Yaris that Toyota has offered for sale in the UK. The original version launched in 1999 was hardly a paragon of style or dynamic appeal. A 2017 facelift for the Yaris reportedly saw the introduction of 900 new parts to the car, with a new front and rear-end design. A new fourth-generation Yaris is coming later in 2020.

Pros
  • Best-in-class infotainment system
  • Cheap to run
Cons
  • No petrol-electric option
  • Alternatives are more fun to drive

re, three-cylinder turbocharged engine develops 257bhp and an energetic 360Nm between 3,000-4,600rpm, giving a claimed 0-62mph time of just 5.5sec. It rides on beautiful looking forged 18-inch BBS alloy wheels that wear Michelin Pilot 4S tyres. Its brakes are lifted straight from the new Supra and are huge relative to the GR's diminutive dimensions.
