Product Overview

The facelifted MINI Countryman introduces a range of new design and technical improvements that make this popular crossover better than ever:
On the outside, there is a redesigned radiator grille up front. LED headlamps and fog lights are now standard equipment. The LED tail lights now feature MINI's unique Union Jack design.
Inside, a new digital cockpit display with 5-inch display becomes available, and sports leather steering wheel is now standard.
The new MINI Countryman is available with three petrol engines and three diesel engines in addition to a plug-in hybrid. Four of them can be combined with ALL4 all-wheel drive system. All these latest-gen engines comply with Euro 6d emission standard.

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
Sales of the plug-in are climbing steadily, from 8% in 2017 to a quarter of the model’s UK output so far this year. It has lost a few BHP (now 217bhp, for which you can blame WLTP emissions tuning) but, as a plus, emits less CO2 and has a better official electric-only range: around 30 miles. The Countryman is like one of those celebrity impersonators you can hire for parties, who look the part but lack bona fide personality.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Sleek styling
  • Decent range
Cons
  • No cowl for digital dials
  • Not the most fun to drive

The MINI Countryman joined the MINI range in 2010. It was the brand’s first foray into SUVs, and it was by and large a good inaugural attempt. The first generation sold well all its life, and this Mk2 version continues to be popular. Launched in 2017 and refreshed again in 2020, the Countryman line-up includes a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant as well as petrol.

Pros
  • Comes with a range of engines
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Cheap to run

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The MINI Countryman PHEV has been around for three years and has just received a facelift. Customers had complained that the older model's ‘handlebar moustache’ grille made the car look a bit sad. The plug-in hybrid system retains its blend of 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor for a combined power output of 217bhp. The 10kWh battery gives an electric-only range of around 30 miles, which is replenished under braking.

Pros
  • Powerful petrol engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Good range of engines
Cons
  • Fiddly infotainment

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The Countryman JCW has been updated to keep its appeal against rivals like the Volkswagen T-Roc and Audi Q2. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit produces 302bhp and 450Nm of torque. It sends that drive to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. While the design might be bursting with character, the same can't be said of the engine. In Sport mode the amplified sound drones, but even the engine's natural soundtrack isn't the most appealing noise.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Good standard equipment
Cons
  • Not as agile as rivals
  • Rear legroom could be better

Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
Electric power assisted steering is laid back in normal mode, turning into corners too languidly. Use the driving modes’ toggle in the gearshifter housing to select sport and the steering becomes heavier and turns in more responsively. A full charge takes 3 hours 15 minutes on the mains, or an hour less using a Chargemaster wallbox. Mini claims the PHEV still offers a 310-mile range.

Pros
  • Powerful dual-motor
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Good range
Cons
  • Lack of fast-charging
  • Alternatives are more fun to drive

Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
The JCW Countryman's four-pot has a whole bunch of kick, but it's not mated to the most surefooted vehicle in this case. Mini's in-car tech is mostly carried over from its more expensive BMW siblings to good, but not perfect effect. Safety features are also on the limited side.

Pros
  • Sleek styling
  • Fun infotainment tech
  • Good fuel economy
Cons
  • Lack of in-car tech
  • Not the most fun to drive

Reviewers from cnet have found the following***:
The Countryman Oxford's sole engine offering is the base 1.5-liter inline-3. Mini's little three-cylinder engine may be fine in purely urban environments, but once the roads open up, it's hard for this little guy to maintain pace. It's not very efficient, offering just 23 miles per gallon city and 32 mpg highway.

Pros
  • Sleek styling
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Lack of standard equipment
  • Uncomfortable ride
  • No automatic climate control

The Cooper S Countryman All4 starts at about $30,000 including delivery fees. The infotainment system is super responsive but isn't the most intuitive. The Countryman comes with forward-collision warning, but other advanced driver aids are nowhere to be found.

Pros
  • Gorgeous styling
  • Powerful engine
  • Comfortable ride
Cons
  • Unresponsive infotainment
  • Lack of advanced driver aids
  • No Android Auto
