Product Overview

Taycan is the first fully-electric vehicle by Porsche. It is also the first production electric vehicle with a system voltage of 800 volts instead of 400. This makes fast charging using DC significantly faster.
Another innovation is the two-speed transmission installed on the rear axle: the first gear gives Taycan even more acceleration from standing still while the second gear enhances efficiency at high speeds.

No car in my experience has ever managed this amount of mass so well. The suspension takes big chunks of Panamera componentry but the actual three-chamber struts are unique to the Taycan. The car rides eerily well but is so deftly damped in Sport and Sport Plus that with that steering and devastating acceleration.

Pros

Cons
  • No automatic gearbox

Porsche Taycan 4S is for now the Taycan au choix. The only non-neg option should be the performance plus battery at £4613. That buys you a 93.4kWh battery compared to a 79.2kWh unit. The 4S with the big battery will have the longest range of any Taycan.

Pros
  • Impressive powertrain
  • Impressive range
Cons
  • Not the most fun to drive
  • Smaller than Turbo S

Porsche Taycan 4S is an electric sports car that goes from 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds. It has a top speed of 155mph and a top price of £91,470. It's expected to cost around £100,000 when it lands next year. But even at that price it looks like an exceptionally compelling deal.

Pros
  • Superb electric power delivery
  • Impressive range
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • More expensive than rivals

For seven years, the Macan has been the best-selling Porsche in the UK. Now there's a GTS model to swell out the range still further. It features the usual GTS blacked-out trope on its front apron, side window trims, headlights and so on. Inside it’s all black Race-Tex upholstery and anodised aluminium.

Pros
  • Sleek looks
  • Powerful engines
Cons
  • Lacklustre ride quality

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
£70,690 car is the simplest, although by no means the least appealing, of Porsche’s battery-electric saloon range. Shorn of a motor at the front, it is both rear-wheel drive and the lightest version of the Taycan. With this larger, optional (£4049) ‘Performance Battery Plus’ your Taycan has more shove.

Pros
  • Punchy, agile handling
  • Excellent rear-wheel drive
  • Decent handling
Cons
  • Lack of power at the front

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The Taycan is the most dynamically convincing four-seat EV we've yet driven. It feels lighter on its feet than a Panamera, despite being 300kg heavier. The steering feels quick but not darty, weighty but consistent. Forward visibility is excellent (although rearward visibility is pretty poor for a saloon, so the car's cameras are vital) The only area in which the Taycan doesn't have the measure of rivals is range – crucial for many.

Pros
  • Class-leading electric performance
  • Impressive handling
Cons
  • Not as fun to drive as a 911
  • Only so-so range

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
On more common 400V chargers, the Taycan will charge at just 50kW as standard, with 150kW capacity only as a £294 option. While the range is less than Tesla’s Model S, in mixed and sometimes quick driving, the car does deliver what it says. The Taycan might just be more enjoyable to drive than any other current four-door Porsche.

Porsche has drawn a line in the sand with the Taycan. Its electric car takes the fight to the Tesla Model S and gives the Americans a bloody nose. The entry-level 4S is as remarkable as its more powerful Turbo and Turbo S stablemates, especially if you opt for the 93.4kWh battery from the more expensive models.

Porsche claims the 0-62mph time of 2.8 seconds is repeatable. The Taycan uses the same drive modes (Normal, Sport, Sport+) as a petrol-powered Porsche. There isn't the same adjustability on the throttle as you might get in a Panamera GTS, but the brakes have a delightful consistency.

Pros
  • Powerful Turbo S
  • Powerful engine

  • No regenerative set-up
  • Loud in the back

The £83,580 Taycan 4S is the most affordable version of the Taycan EV. Despite its chunky 2,220kg kerbweight, with four-wheel drive, it'll still leap from 0-62mph in four seconds flat thanks to launch control. Material quality is fine and the build is brilliant, but leather trim isn't fitted as standard.

autoexpress[11]

Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
With two electric motors, two gears on the rear motor and a liberal sprinkling of Zuffenhausen magic, the Taycan handles with a deftness that a heavy, four-wheel-drive car has no right to. Porsche charges £210 for a public charging cable, which is as crazy as buying a 911 and then being charged for access to the hose on a petrol pump. You have to pay £2,172 for Porsche's semi-autonomous drive mode and adaptive cruise control.

Pros
  • Terrific handling
  • Excellent infotainment system

Cons
  • Pricey for what you get

Porsche's first pure-electric car, the Taycan, is now available as a rear-wheel-drive variant. The base Taycan has a single electric motor producing 322bhp, but the system can ‘overboost’ to deliver 402bhp for a short period of time. The standard battery size is 79.2kWh – good, Porsche claims, for a range of 268 miles between charges.

In adding the new GTS model to the Taycan line-up Porsche has created its best-driving EV. The dual-motor set-up for the GTS serves up 590bhp on overboost and 850Nm of torque for a 3.7-second 0-62mph time. It's effortless, possesses an enormous surfeit of power on demand, and whisks its occupants along in serene silence.

Porsche Taycan 4S is an astonishing level of performance, but it’s also an astonishingly accessible and intuitive one. Even equipped with 20-inch wheels the ride is sublime, retaining a degree of supple compliance even in Sport Plus mode. The 800-volt architecture both boosts efficiency and makes for fast charging, if you get to the right kind of charger. Stripping away the more ferocious aspects of the Taycan reveals a gloriously comfortable yet still amazingly rapid GT.

Cons

carwow[15]

Reviewers from carwow have found the following***:
The Porsche Taycan is an electric car designed to turn volts into outright velocity. Its curvy bonnet, subtle air intakes and sleek sloping roofline look like a cross between the 911 and the Panamera. The rear-driven entry-level car can still manage that sprint in a respectable 5.4 seconds, though it doesn't feel as quick behind the wheel as that figure suggests. There are also a bunch of high-tech electrical systems designed to make the Taycan one of the most fun-to-drive electric cars around.

Porsche will offer the Taycan 4S in two different flavors when it launches next year. The base 4S will use a single-layer, 79.2-kilowatt-hour battery mated to a pair of electric motors. There are multiple vehicle modes on offer, but I could take 'em or leave 'em.

Cons
  • Spongy brakes
  • No regenerative braking

Porsche's first production EV is worth getting excited about. The Taycan Turbo looks nicer, drives fresher and has an interior miles better than any Tesla. But the starting price that's $50,000 higher than a Model S Performance is a bitter pill. Future models, coming soon, will be far more affordable.

In profile, the Taycan's 911-like design characteristics come through best. On the downside, Porsche nickels-and-dimes you for the best charging experience. Porsche Intelligent Range Manager calculates charge stops based on available range and driving style. The Taycan is arguably best viewed here as an all-electric sports car.

Pros
  • Sleek, high-tech design
  • High-tech infotainment
  • Comfortable, supportive seats

It's nimbler than its size and weight would lead you to believe. The regenerative braking system is extremely powerful. While its brakes have a huge amount of bite, I'd welcome the ability to one-pedal drive it on back roads. In the United States, the Taycan comes standard with three years of unlimited 30-minute fast-charging sessions.

Pros
  • Powerful engines
  • Powerful regenerative braking system
