Product Overview

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe F44 is a subcompact sedan in production from 2019. It is available with a range of inline-3 and inline-4 engines that displaced 1.5 to 2.0 liters.
BMW has made a good effort in aerodynamics, with a decent 0.25 coefficient of drag to show for it. Unfortunately, the designers took some time off and delivered an ugly, FWD-based car. In comparison, Mazda and Honda make much more compelling options in this segment.
Drivers who appreciate handling should keep in mind that the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe F44 uses MacPherson front suspension, which doesn't provide the best cornering performance.

The M240i variant also features a range of aerodynamic turning vanes and splitters to reduce lift. BMW claims the new coupé has 12% more torsional rigidity and maintains 50:50 weight distribution. The car’s extra length has enabled the boot to grow to 390 litres, although space in the rear predictably remains limited.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Excellent rear-seat practicality
Cons
  • Lack of rear leg room

The 220d slots in beneath the 3 Series as BMW's baby saloon for Europe, with a coupé-inspired rear end, four doors and more leg room than the 2 Series coupé. The 220d's engine is a transverse version of the twin-turbo engine that we've already seen in the 320d and 520d, making 187bhp and 295lb ft of torque. Here, it's able to manage 0-62mph in 7.6sec via an eight-speed automatic.

Pros
  • Powerful diesel engine
  • Good standard equipment
  • Decent handling
Cons
  • Lacklustre handling
  • No automatic gearbox

Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
In the 220d, power comes from the same 187bhp, 295lb ft 2.0-litre diesel used in the larger 320d. Acceleration is brisk and effortless both off the line and when up to speed. But the diesel engine can’t do much to right the 2 Series Gran Coupé’s tepid dynamics.

Pros
  • Fantastic looks
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Diesel engine isn’t for everyone
  • Tepid dynamics

The M235i has lost the key ingredients that made its predecessor stand out as a relatively affordable driver’s car all those years ago. This new one certainly doesn’t look or sound as good, but as an all-paw hot-hatch rival with accessible real world performance and confidence-inspiring levels of poise and grip - it works.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Comfortable ride
  • Decent infotainment system
Cons
  • Feels a bit derivative

All Gran Coupe models come as standard in Sport trim, but for an additional £2,500 you can specify the M Sport trim. For this you get larger 18-inch M alloys, a bigger 10.25-inch central touchscreen display and Dakota leather upholstery rather than cloth. By comparison the Mercedes CLA 220d AMG Line costs £35,475 and comes with no more standard equipment than the BMW.

Pros
  • Gorgeous looks
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Good standard equipment
Cons
  • Somewhat soulless engine
  • Not the most refined

BMW has added the four-door Gran Coupe to its growing 2 Series family. The car sits alongside the smaller three-door 2 Series Coupe, the drop-top 2 Series Convertible and the family-focused 2 Series Active Tourer and Gran Tourer models. Based on the front-wheel-drive platform of the 1 Series hatchback, adding extra space while aiming for a distinctive, more high-end look.

Pros
  • Competitively priced
  • Lots of standard equipment
Cons
  • Expensive compared to rivals

Reviewers from carwow have found the following***:
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has a distinctive large grille and LED headlights at the front, exactly like the 1 Series. It's only in profile and at the rear that you can tell it's a 2 Series. The frameless doors and different roofline are really the biggest changes. The 1.5-litre petrol is the best all-rounder but the diesels are good for long trips. The M235i is fast but not exciting enough.

Pros
  • Fantastic infotainment system
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • No swoopy roof

The 2 Series Gran Coupe will make its public debut during the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show opening its doors on November 22. The front-wheel drive platform let BMW carve out an acceptable amount of space inside. The infotainment system looks almost exactly like the 3's, and I like the split-screen functionality.

Pros
  • Gran Coupe looks and feels like a coupe
  • Fantastic infotainment system
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of rear-seat space
  • Not as fun to drive as rivals
