Product Overview

Tesla Model Y is a compact battery electric crossover in production from 2020. It is the smaller sibling to Tesla's full-size electric SUV, the Model X, inheriting many of the latter's features.
Engineers at Tesla clearly made a great effort in aerodynamics, with a class-leading 0.23 coefficient of drag to show for it.
Drivers who appreciate handling will be pleased to know that the Tesla Model Y comes with double-wishbone at the front and multi-link at the rear. Combined with RWD, this setup provides one of the best handling characteristics and tuning capabilities.

autocar[1]

Reviewer score 71%
Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
All Model Ys come with Tesla’s Autopilot system, whose name I don’t like much for a pretty good adaptive cruise control system that will help out with steering too. The rest of the driving experience is good. The steering is smooth, is accurate and has a good amount of self-centring. It doesn't need more weight than in Comfort, the lightest of its three modes.

Pros
  • Clean cabin
  • Supercharger rapid-charging network
  • Good handling
Cons
  • No touchscreen
  • No automatic or auto-hold

autoexpress[2]

Reviewer score 81%
Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
Priced from around £55,000, the all-wheel-drive Model Y will go head-to-head with the Audi Q4 e-tron, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Mercedes EQA and Volkswagen ID4. Long Range version manages up to 315 miles from a single charge of its 75kWh battery, and an impressive 0-62mph time of under five seconds. Upgrading to the Performance variant brings a slight drop in range to 298 miles, with more than a second shaved from benchmark sprint time.

Pros
  • Impressive range
  • Great on-board tech
Cons
  • Lacklustre ride
  • Not the most comfortable to drive

autoexpress[3]

Reviewer score 65%
Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The Model Y outpaces anything else that calls itself a compact SUV. Against the clock, 0-60mph takes an estimated 3.5 seconds. The all-wheel-drive set-up isn't just there for on-road performance. It's a clean, but sparse cabin, with the giant touchscreen the only thing to stand out.

Pros
  • Comfortable to drive
  • Great off-road performance
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Pricier than the Model 3

autoexpress[4]

Reviewer score 80%
Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
Model Y is based on the same platform as the Model 3. All versions of the Model Y are four-wheel drive, courtesy of a two-motor set-up with one fitted to each axle. There's lots of room inside for all five seats, and boot space is generous for a medium-sized electric SUV. A 117-litre 'frunk' gives some good extra storage space.

Pros
  • Powerful four-wheel drive
  • Excellent infotainment system
Cons
  • Not as fast as the Model 3

carmagazine[5]

Reviewer score 76%
Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
The Model Y has a 315-mile range and can go from 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds. It can be had for £65k - the price of an iPace or Mercedes EQC – but you can upgrade to the Performance model, whose range dips to 298 miles. All Model Ys get Tesla’s Autopilot system as standard – Level 2 driving assistance with traffic-aware motorway cruising and braking, and automatic steering to keep you in lane. The Model Y is yet to be Euro NCAP tested, but the related Model 3 is rated as having excellent assistance.

Pros
  • Superb range
  • Impressive electric range
  • Superb interior
Cons
  • Expensive for what’s on offer
