Product Overview

BMW i4 is a fully electric sedan based on the company's CLAR platform. It shares much of the design elements with the G26 4 Series Gran Coupe.
At launch, the i4 is available with two drivetrain options, including a 544hp dual-motor M50 version that accelerates to 100km/h from a standing still in 3.9 seconds. The lesser, RWD i4 eDrive40 in turn boasts an electric range of up to 590km and a coefficient of drag of just 0.24.
Apart from these EV-only characteristics, the i4 is largely a mirror image of the ICE-powered G26 Gran Coupe. It was even unveiled a week before the latter. Some of the feature highlights include a large 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display operating BMW's new iDrive system, a large set of driver assistance functions, and the extensive use of recyclable or recycled materials.

autocar[1]

Reviewer score 83%
Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The throttle calibration is sweetly balanced, mating excellent pedal weighting with a good degree of sensitivity. Despite the motors being asked to haul well over two tonnes, the i4 proves very rapid when dialled into Boost mode. Brake pedal feel is outstanding by electric car standards, with an impressive balance between regular and recuperative braking.

Pros
  • Powerful four-wheel drive
  • Powerful electric motors
  • Comfortable ride
Cons
  • Lack of rear-wheel-drive capability

autocar[2]

Reviewer score 70%
Reviewers from autocar have found the following***:
The i4 has just about the same proportions and road footprint as a 3 Series. Its tracks are a little wider, and its centre of gravity is lower. Long accents on the body sides give the car its own character. Two models are offered, the headline-grabbing 537bhp twin-motor, all-wheel-drive i4 M50 (£63,905) and the slightly lighter, slightly calmer single-m motor, rear-drive eDrive40 (£9500)

Pros
  • Powerful eDrive
  • Powerful engine
  • Good range
Cons
  • Lack of refinement

autoexpress[3]

Reviewer score 77%
Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
At £63,905, the i4 M50 is around £4,000 more expensive than the £12,000 i4 Performance. The i4 remains a strong package with a well-made cabin and blistering pace. But perhaps the cheaper eDrive40 model will be the pick of the pack.

Pros
  • Powerful electric motor
  • Impressive range
  • Comfortable ride
Cons
  • No mechanical limited-slip differential

autoexpress[4]

Reviewer score 84%
Reviewers from autoexpress have found the following***:
The i4 appeals with astonishing steering precision and smooth handling, and despite the two-tonne weight there's relatively little body roll. The ultra-low centre of gravity comes into play here; it's actually 53mm lower than in the 3 Series. Despite the incredible rigidity that BMW's engineers have achieved, it's not quite as outstanding in this regard as the similarly powerful M3 Competition.
Find the original article here.
Pros
  • Excellent range
  • Excellent handling
Cons
  • Not quite as powerful as the M3 Competition

carmagazine[5]

Reviewer score 83%
Reviewers from carmagazine have found the following***:
The i4 M50 is more powerful than an M4 – and certainly more muscular, with a stonking 586lb ft available instantly. The eDrive40 is still pretty sprightly – keeping toe-to-toe with a stock Tesla Model 3. BMW's nailed the ride quality here – treading the fine balance between cossetting comfort and sharp body control.

Pros
  • Powerful engine
  • Impressive range
  • Comfortable to drive
Cons
  • Lack of e-motor is a little blunter
