Product Overview

The 2020 27-inch iMac features 10th-gen Intel processors up to 10 cores, AMD Radeon Pro graphics, fast SSDs, and a new nano-texture glass option for the Retina 5K display, a 1080p FHD FaceTime camera, and more.
For the first time, the 2020 27-inch iMac can be optioned with a 10-core processor, which boosts up to 5.0GHz and delivers 65% improvement in CPU performance. The maximum memory support is doubled to 128GB. Thanks to the new AMD graphics, up to 55% faster GPU performance is also achieved.
The new iMac includes the Apple T2 Security Chip that provides on-the-fly data encryption for everything stored on the SSD. It also checks for the software during the boot processor.
The Retina 5K display now features True Tone technology, which automatically adjusts the color temperature of the display to match a user’s ambient lighting. There is also a nano-texture glass options for even better viewing under various lighting conditions, such as a bright room or indirect sunlight. Unlike typical matte finishes that have a coating added to the surface to scatter light, this industry-leading option is produced through an innovative process that etches the glass itself at the nm level. The result is extremely low reflectivity and less glare while maintaining stellar image quality and contrast.
Last but not least, the FaceTime HD camera now features 1080p resolution, while the Image Signal Processor in the T2 Security Chip brings tone mapping, exposure control, and face detection for a much higher quality camera experience.

Reviewers from arstechnica have found the following***:
The 2020, 27-inch iMac is a long overdue update, but it’s also a modest one. It doesn’t do anything to change the value proposition of an iMac. In this configuration, this is one of Apple's fastest Macs on sale today.

Pros
  • Great performance for the price
  • Nano-texture display offers better contrast and more vivid colors than matte screens
Cons
  • Expensive for what it offers

digitaltrends[2]

Reviewers from digitaltrends have found the following***:
Going from 720p to 1080p, it's now the best built-in webcam you'll find on a Mac. Apple has a new sensor that uses backside illumination, which results in improved low-light performance. The Magic Keyboard is great, but it lacks many of the features found in MacBook keyabords.

Pros
  • Great 1080p webcam
  • Improved battery life
  • Improved webcam
Cons
  • Lacks Apple Silicon
  • No Thunderbolt 3

macworld[3]

Reviewers from macworld have found the following***:
The 27-inch iMac has three built-in microphones that Apple calls “studio quality” and stereo speakers that are loud and clean. This is most likely the last iteration of this generation of the iMac. Apple has announced that it is making its own Mac processors and that you could see the first Apple silicon Macs by the end of this year.

Pros
  • Great performance
  • New FaceTime camera
  • Improved video conferencing
Cons
  • No Thunderbolt 3

notebookcheck[4]

Reviewer score 76%
Reviewers from notebookcheck have found the following***:
The processor is an Intel Core i9-10910, which is exclusive for Apple's iMac. It offers 10 cores (20 threads) with a maximum clock of 5.0 GHz. Compared to the iMac Pro 2018 and especially the most powerful MacBook Pro 16, there is a significant performance advantage. The iMac 27 is only available with SSDs, but a storage capacity of 256 GB is not much.

Pros
  • Matte IPS display
  • Good input devices
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • No Thunderbolt 3
  • Only 256 GB SSD by default

pcmag[5]

Reviewers from pcmag have found the following***:
The iMac's performance advantage largely depends on the types of workflows you typically perform. The $1,799 starting configuration confers many of the benefits of the version reviewed here. Increase your budget to $4,500—just below the iMac Pro's $5,000 starting price—and you get a seriously powerful machine.

Pros
  • Big, beautiful screen with 1080p resolution
  • Sleek design
  • Strong performance
Cons
  • No touch screen
  • No touch-screen option

techadvisor[6]

Reviewers from techadvisor have found the following***:
Starting at £1,799, the 2020 iMac is not the cheapest computer going but as far as all in one desktops go it's still my pick above anything on the Windows side. The design isn't as elegant or premium as the iMac, but if you don't push your desktop too hard and would prefer a Windows machine, this isn't a bad alternative. You can buy any of the three below configurations direct from Apple.

Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Excellent performance
  • Excellent battery life
Cons
  • No upgradability
  • No Thunderbolt 3

techradar[7]

The iMac 27-inch (2020) is one of the most powerful all-in-ones we've used. Apple claims the new iMac offers up to 40% faster 8K ProRes transcoding in Final Cut Pro X, 35% faster rendering with Arnold in Autodesk Maya and up to 25% faster build time in Xcode. There's also a new studio-quality microphone array which, in conjunction with the FaceTime HD webcam, will make sure you're seen and heard in crystal clear quality.

Pros
  • Powerful all-in-one
  • Improved webcam performance
  • New T2 Security Chip
Cons
  • More expensive than previous iMacs

theverge[8]

Reviewers from theverge have found the following***:
Apple's nano texture finish diffuses the light that hits from the outside and doesn't scatter the light from the pixels as much. Unlike other screens, there's really no coating on top of the nano finish; it's just etched, bare glass. There really are no surprises with the 2020 27-inch iMac, which is exactly what it is.

Pros
  • Very fast
  • Nano texture finish works great
  • Very good battery life
Cons
  • No Thunderbolt 3

Apple is positioning the iMac as the desktop to get for amateur and semi-professionals. It's more than likely that the 2020 iMac will be one of the last of Apple's all-in-ones to run an Intel processor. The iMac was able to convert a 12-minute 4K video to 1080p in 5 minutes and 39 seconds.

Pros
  • Gorgeous 4K display
  • Sleek design
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • Middling performance
  • No Thunderbolt 3

The iMac 2020 27-inch is a seriously versatile machine. The base model is perfectly adequate for those who just want a fantastic and very fast desktop machine. Those who want to push up the RAM, processor and storage can do so. The model I have in for testing is the off-the-shelf top-end model, with the i7 and 8GB RAM. The real star is just how quiet the machine stays.

Pros
  • Fantastic performance
  • Great battery life
  • Great value for money
Cons
  • No Thunderbolt 3

Apple's new 27-inch iMac costs $4,500 and has a Core i9 processor. The T2 chip also improves the speakers a bit even though the hardware hasn't changed. Apple announced it will move to ARM-based processors, just like the ones inside the iPhone and iPad.

Pros
  • New nano-texture glass design
  • More powerful Intel processors
  • Improved battery life
Cons
  • Expensive for a Mac
  • No Thunderbolt 3 port
